Yeah, 800x600 is the highest resolution mentioned in the monitor configuration options...
Is this a bug or something I might have done wrong?

This should help Howto: Install Linux Guest Additions + Xorg config
Oh and so you know there is a manual that comes with your copy of VirtualBox. Look in the main VirtualBox program and hit help -> content.

Check this thread, which discusses the same issue and also has some solution (for the Live CD but I think also applicable for an installation without guest additions). Not the cleanest, but works...
