Virtualbox 3.2.2 - Failed to open a session for the VM

Post by leigh_wardle »

I've just upgraded Virtualbox to version 3.2.2 on a Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit host.
Everything was working fine with the previous version 3.1.8.

But now when I start any of my virtual machines I get the following error:

Failed to open a session for the virtual machine MyMachineName.

The VM session was closed before any attempt to power it on.

Details:

Result Code:
E_FAIL (0x80004005)
Component:
Machine
Interface:
ISession {12f4dcdb-12b2-4ec1-b7cd-ddd9f6c5bf4d}

I have tried rebooting the host, but that made no difference.

Regards,
Leigh

Turn off nested paging and see if they boot.
Also Make sure that the version of VBox is 3.2.2-62321. The release 3.2.2-62298 had a problem and was replaced the 3rd of June.

Thanks, Perryg, for the suggestions.

I am running the latest release, VBox 3.2.2-62321.

I only have one VM that is powered off, allowing me to check the Settings - nested paging was already turned off.
Attempting to start it gives the same error.

I am sure all my VMshave nested paging turned off - it must be the default.

First I have to ask, did you upgrade with these in a saved state and not powered off? Not a good idea, just for the future.
Look and see if the guests (one that you can try to boot) log file shows anything. If so post that here (as an attachment).

At the time of the upgrade, 11 guests were in a saved state and not powered off, 1 guest was powered off.

Attempting to start the one guest that was powered off gives the error and does not create a log.

I have another hard disk with my previous Virtualbox version on it - I assume if I boot that up I will be able to power all my guests down - will that help? (I suspect not - as my one guest that was powered off gives the error).

I really need to know if the guest that was powered down produces a log file and if so please post it (as an attachment)
Look in the main VBox program and click once on the guest and then Machine -> show log. Then save and post.

I have attached the most recent log file for the guest - it's from an earlier version of VirtualBox - attempting to start that guest with Virtualbox 3.2.2 does not generate a log file.

Well I am sorry but this does not help me.
If you want to proceed further you will need the DEVs help. Post a ticket at bugtracker and see what they have to say. Reference this topic and give the as much information as you can.

Thanks, Perryg, for your help.
I will post a bugtracker ticket.
Just for the record, I upgraded to Virtualbox 3.2.4, but the problem remains.

The workaround is to re-install an earlier version - VirtualBox 3.1.8 now works for me.

I have the same problem with Virtualbox, Version 3.2.4 Windows 7 32 bit running Ubuntu 10.4x64 as a guest. I could start the guest after the upgrade so no problem there, but after I restarted the windows machine the guest could not be started.

Do you have any other guests - will any of them start?

FYI, I had this same exact error on Vista x64, and it turns out that the error is because while I had previously tried to get VBoxVmService running, the service just wouldn't launch. That is, until Windows Update restarted my computer for me. Then it appears VBoxVmService launches just fine, because the reason I got this error was because the guest was already running under VBoxVmService.

I am not using VBoxVmService. I did not know what it was until you mentioned it.

I also posted this in the bug tracker under issue #6930.
The bug also exists in 3.2.6. I fired up a virtual machine that I had not used since 3.1.8 or possibly earlier and got the same error. What has corrected the problem for me is to release the VBoxGuestAdditions.iso from the CD/DVD device. I have also noticed that I have two of them in the virtual media manager. My installation is in C:\Apps\VirtualBox. The two devices' locations are listed as
C:\Apps\VIRTUAL~1\VBoxGuestAdditions.iso (which is the one currently selected)
and
C:\Apps\VirtualBox\VBoxGuestAdditions.iso
Switching to the other device also seems to fix the problem. After switching back to the original one, the virtual machine will still start up again. Go figure!
