SOLVED: virtualbox 3.2.0 flooding my logs with systraces

Post by bodo »

I am getting a lot of these messages below after upgrading to virtualbox 3.2.0 (3.1.6 was ok)
gentoo 10 x64, all updates, kernel 2.6.33-vanilla and 2.6.34-gentoo

problem seems to happen when network operations involved (not all though) - noticed with:
- clicking links in internet explorer/firefox (in guest)
- connecting by rdp

but does not seem to happen when using ftp or wireshark(?)

host os and guests seem to run fine, so flooding seems to be the only symptom so far. very annoying though. there might be other one - guest having problems with shutting down completely.

i was googling for it, also in here and bug reports and found nothing so far.

what do you guys think? does anybody else have this? shall i open bug report for this - here or for gentoo devs?

cool, so i am not alone at least ;-) what's your setup?
distro,x64/x86,vbox version,kernel version etc.

write a bit more also on when/under what circumstances are you observing the problem.

btw. i have opened a bug report for it, so far for gentoo only: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=322475

silly me, I decided to have a look at the link you included finally:

Weird problem. Getting tons of these warnings in dmesg, yet nothing seems to actually be broken.

Yeah sorry, I should've included more information in my actual post.
I have only tried this with 2.6.33. I do have the zen-kernel.org patchset. I can try other kernel versions if needed.

I'm also running gentoo amd64 - that seems to be the only common ground between us?
Host machine specs are two intel xeon e5520's, asus z8pe-d18 motherboard, the nics are a couple e1000e and a couple e1000 cards.

Interestingly, I've only tried this with a win7 guest, and I get an issue when RDPing sometimes. Says the machine doesnt have enough virtual memory and RDP crashes. I'll edit this post and attach a screenshot the next time it happens. BTW the VM has 4gb of ram and the host has 24gb. According to tcpdump/bwm-ng/iptraf the machine is still running, i just can't rdp to it. Sometimes it fixes itself if i turn VRDP off and on again.

Hi Frank,

Thx for the patch, it resolved the issue with systraces but it seems it caused a new problem. Here is the story:
- installed 3.2.6, noticed systraces problem is gone. huzzzaaaah!
- shortly after noticed dramatic network performance drop - connecting to W2K8R2 guest via RDP is soooo slow, noticed access to shares on the guest is also veeeery sloooow
- guest is bridged to gigabit ethernet interface
- there are also other network cards in the host with different link speed than the one above (e.g. wifi54g or 100Mbit)
- seems that accessing the guest from other machine on gigabit network works fine - no slow downdowns (at first sight this might not be completely true)
- tried pushing the file from W2K8R2 guest to win7 client over wifi - should be around 2MB/sec, measured around 10KB/s
- reverted to build 3.2.4-r1 from gentoo portage - all back to normal, i.e network performance awesome again, but systraces are killing my logs
- applied your patch posted in bug 6872, reinserted new modules into kernel, restarted the W2K8R2 guest - same problem as in 3.2.6 again (wanted to verify if something else was breaking the performance - seems this patch is responsible)
- back to 3.1.8 for me again :-(

Can you help again? I know I am stretching it, so thanks for any future fixes to this.

Rgds,
B.

Thanks for your feedback! Always nice to read if something was fixed. We usually get much more complaints if something was not fixed or if there is a regression ...
