VBox TAP Adapter - i can't get any IP adress on guest OS

Post by zoltan »

hi, i'm trying to use VBox with Vista as a host and everyting seems to be ok (i've installed ubuntu 7.10 on virtual machine). but i have one problem - network. i'm trying to use VBox network card (Virtual Box TAP Adapter) , i can see this device on my list but with comment "network unidentified". on guest system i can't get any ip adress (0.0.0.0). does anyone know how to fix this problem? i suppose that this is some Vista issue, why i always get "network unidentified" message while using this network card.

Did you connect your host interface to a bridge? If so, is your host getting an IP as well or did you configure a static IP for your host? If your host interface is not bridged, you had to install a DHCP server on the host and assign it to the host interface the guest is attached to.

if you choose attach to host interface
the tap is your host network adapter
the tun is your guest network adapter

tap should be a network(10.10.10.0/24) different with other real adapter
tap should assign a ip like this 10.10.10.1/24
then you tun can have ip 10.10.10.2/24
a new network is form

you need a dhcp for assigning ip automatically
and you need to route packet if 10.10.10.1 is a gateway for the tun
search ipenablerouter for this
of course dns you need to assign statically to ur tun to browse www

ipenablerouter
simple forwarding between 2 lans
