Problem on installing guest additions

Post by satimis »

Hi folks,

Host - ubuntu 10.04
Guest (VM) - ubuntu 10.04 (a new VM)
Sun VirtualBox 3.1.6 r59338

I followed;
Howto: Install Linux Guest Additions + Xorg config
http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=15679

to install "Guest Additions". But forgot at start clicking;
Devices -> "Install Guest Additions"

resulting in a "white screen" displayed after login.

Then I started;
recovery mode -> Run in failsafe graphic mode
-> Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode

to repeat all steps including clicking;
Devices -> "Install Guest Additions" at start.

Problem still remains only a white screen displayed after login.

Also following warning popup at booting the VM

Code: Select all

The Virtual Machine reports that the guest OS does not support mouse pointer integration in the current video mode. You need to capture the mouse (by clicking over the VM display or pressing the host key) in order to use the mouse inside the guest OS

Please advise how to fix the problem. TIA

Hi folks,

I found the cause. It is 3D rendering problem. If on settings uncheck "3D Acceleration" then the problem gone. But I have no clue to fix the problem on enabling "3D Acceleration"

Does your host have full 3D capabilities? If not, then that's the problem. The Guest takes what 3D you have on the Host, and if that fails, the 3D options you automatically get on the Guest will fail, resulting in the white screen right after logon.

Hi,

RAM 8G onboard
Phenom II X4 955

I'm in complete lost. This Sun virtual box is for testing ONLY running >15 VMs with 64bit Ubuntu 10.04 as host. All Linux VMs are running 64 bit OS, including Debian 5.04, Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04 and 32/64 bit Win7, 32/64 bit Vista, 32/64 bit WinXP, etc. Before installing Guest Additions all VMs ran 3D accelerating without problem. After installing Guest Additions all Windows and Debian VMs run 3D accelerating without problem. All Ubuntu VMs have problem running 3D accelerating except 1 Ubuntu 10.04 VM which was upgraded from version 9.10. It works on 3D accelerating. I spent almost a day to find out the cause without result.

Either the desktop environment it gives you (default Gnome for Ubuntu) has problems with it's Compiz (desktop effects), or your 3D doesn't work properly. You can't have 3D without the Guest Additions. Please check the Howto: Install Linux Guest Additions + Xorg config for any packages you might be missing, especially the mesa ones. Else you have to somehow force 3D to be off.
