RS232 ports not working

I installed Win NT 4.0 in a VM as guest-OP (host: Win XP Pro SR2 with latest updates, virtualbox 1.5.2) as I do have an old application running on Win NT 4.0 which communicates via COM1 to an external device.

No communication possible.

I do have an other application running on Win XP and communicating
via COM1 to a different external device.
In order to check if I made configuration-mistakes in virtualBox I installed a new VM with guest-OP Win XP and configured communication via COM1.
No communication possible.

I am sure that the problem is in VirtualBox.
Does anyone successfully established a successful communication via COM1?
