How to setup network for XP-Guest on W2003-host...

Post by mbaas »

Hi,

I am running a VB (with XP) on a Win2003-Server. The installation (3.1.2) automatically setup NAT and my VB was able to connect to the web w/o any config from me, so I was happy. But then I wanted to connect to the VM from other machines in the network, and couldn't. While the VM sees the other PCs (and can access them), other machines do not see the VM. With the help of a superuserI was able to let the VM appear in my network, but unfortunately that cut the net for the server - I can still access the VM from other workstations, but not the server. And the server cannot access the web nor the other machines.

Is there a step-by-step instruction for dummies anywhere? Or could someone pls. help and guide me through the setup?

Thanks

Michael

Do you have CiscoVPN or some other VPN software installed in the host?
Usually when you loose host networking when using Bridged it is due to some other software that interferes with the Bridged adapter.
This is usually solved by uninstalling the VPN software, setting up the VB bridge and then reinstalling the VPN software.
As for instructions on setting up the Bridge, there really are none. It usually just works and there are no other things that you need to do unless you have a conflict.

No VPN. In fact, I have a LAN-Connection and the VB Host-Only Network. LAN-Connection uses the following elements: Client for Microsoft networks; VB Bridged Networking Driver; File/Printer Sharing; TCP/IP - plain vanilla, so to say ;)

Check the host-only address range and make sure that it is not in the same address range as the rest of your network.
Main VBox program -> File -> Preferences -> Network -> click the screw driver. Also you can try turning off the DHCP server there and assigning an address manually in the guest in case the DHCP server is conflicting with another DHCP server on the LAN.

The host-only range is 192.168.56.101..254 (default), whereas my netw is a 192.168.1.* net. I tried to turn off DHCP, but no success. BTW, as soon as I start the VM (it doesn't even need to boot the guest O/S), the hosts nw-conncetion is killed.

From a host terminal/command windows VBoxManage showvminfo <VM Name> and post here. Replace <VM Name> with the actual name of the VM. Use "" if the name has a space in it.

OK according to this you are using Bridged and not host-only.

See this http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/5924

Setup an account and add yourself to the ticket. Send log file and a copy of the results from the showvminfo you sent to me.
As I suspect there must be something that is conflicting with the VBox Bridge adapter.
