Running 3D Graphics Programs in Windows on a Linux host?

Post by rickdane »

I have been trying to run 3D graphics programs including Rhino modeler, 3Ds max, houdini and others on a guest windows vista virtualbox machine that is running on an ubuntu host. I have an MSI 9800GT graphics card and it seems that something is not working correctly as I am unable to access directx (if I remember the error message correctly). I have tried looking into this through searching online but cannot find much information. I figure that my MSI graphics card may not be well supported by ubuntu and virtualbox. I am wondering if there are certain graphics cards that work best to run 3D applications on a linux host with virtualbox.

Also, I was unable to install the driver for my graphics card within the windows vista virtual machine, for some reason it will not allow me to install it, even though I normally could install it and use 3D software when just running a windows machine from the hard drive.

I would greatly appreciate any information on this issue

Host hardware drivers installing on Guest is in the VirtualBox FAQ.
Other point is in the manual, chapter 4, Guest Additions.
