Installing Win7 OEM Version from eeePC 1101 on a Linux host

Post by zdavatz »

Hi

I am trying to install the OEM of Win7 version that came bundled with my eeePC 1101HA in VirtualBox 3.0.12 on my Linux Gentoo host.

The description of my problem can be found here:

I have also included all the screen shots.

Please see above links: (access-violation-at-address-00404f06.jpg and CreateInstanceEnum?-failed-by-WBEM_S_FALSE.jpg) and also please see what I set via the file win7set. It is all attached. Setting those settings with

VBoxManage setextradata

did not help. So what else do you recommend I do? In the mean time I will search more in the forums and report here what I find.

I did follow these instructions:

Well, since you have a recovery disc that's looking for it's recovery partition, that you probably wiped with the Gentoo install, you can't install W7 inside your VM. Besides that, you're also violating the license terms. OEM is hardware bound, it's made and sold in combination with your laptop/netbook. A VM emulates different hardware. Because of the license limitations, we can't help you.

Ok, thank you for your information. But I still want to run win7 on my eeePC not on another PC. It is the same hardware. So basically MS stole my money! But we are used to that.

It's not the same hardware from the OS point of view. If you want to run W7 legally, you need to either create a dual boot environment, or install Linux in a VM which you run on Windows.
You can try to obtain in some way an OEM install disc and try to install W7 with the key that's at the bottom of your netbook. But it's still a violation of the license terms.

Well it is still the same machine on my table ;) even if Microsoft is making a mockery of me here! This is not what I call innovation (and what they try to show off with)! But thank you for your tip and help. That is highly appreciated. Have a good one!

VirtualBox is great and truly innovative and helpful!

Thank you VirtualBox.
