Windows guest crashes when thumbdrive "inserted"

Post by haxwithaxe »

Hey all,
I have a windows guest running in virtualbox3. I can enable usb support, and use some non thumbdrive usb devices but if I enable/"insert" a thumbdrive windows freezes and my cpu maxes out until I kill the vm. If I boot it up with it enabled the same thing happens except it never gets to the login screen. Any ideas?

Please attach the complete log file.
Also did you enter any information in the fstab concerning USB?
Are you a member of the vboxusers group?

The logfile is now attached to my original post.

No usb related fstab entries.

I am a member of vboxusers.
Thanks for the quick reponse.
Just some extra info, I have no trouble with "inserting" usb thumbdrives in Linux or Windows 7 VMs.

First the top of the log is disturbing. Do your other VMs have the following?

00:00:00.371 Your keyboard type does not appear to be known to VirtualBox. If
00:00:00.371 you would like to help us improve the product, please submit a bug
00:00:00.371 report, attach this logfile and provide information about what type
00:00:00.371 of keyboard you have and whether you are using a remote X server or
00:00:00.371 something similar.
00:00:00.371
00:00:00.371 The tables for your keyboard are:

The error you are getting is a permissions error and for some reason it looks like a COM error that can not reach the USB devices such as mouse. You did not put a filter in the USB settings for the keyboard or mouse did you?

I think the log I posted is with no filters at all. My keyboard is a Lenovo laptop keyboard so I'm not suprised about that message. It's in some of the logs for my other VMs but not all of them.

I find this very strange that it is in some but not all. You might want to post a ticket in bugtracker and attach the entire log file. Also copy a link to here so they can see what problems you are having. Post the ticket number here as well as the resolution so other can benefit from this. Link to bugtracker is below my post and you will need to setup an account there as well because they are on a different system.
