[SOLVED] "Lost" USB Devices with 3.0.10 on Karmic

I am running 3.0.10 PUEL on Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic. (Guest: XP Pro)
I saw all 5 usb devices when i first got it working, i disconnected the one device i mainly want to use in XP after checking it was there, i have since not seen it again in the VBox' USB Filter dialog.

lsusb still shows the device the way it showed when i first had it in vbox.
The device in question is a phone, i unplugged it to install the drivers before reconnecting it. It has not shown up since.

the M-audio used to show as Unknown [0100], but the Phone has been too long since i have seen it to really recall what it was called.
I was able to pick it from the GUI and "add usb filter from device" and it showed up in XP fine.

What i wonder is if there is simply something i miss to do properly to fully populate the Device List in the GUI again.
I am in the vboxusers group and i can use the Chicony webcam in laptop fine in XP, same for the Sandisk usb SD card reader and the Realtek SDcard reader (built into the laptop)

I tried to make a manual filter, which does not show up either.

Any ideas appreciated ,

EDIT: in unplugged and replugged the usb sdcard reader, which now also fails to show in VBoxManage list usbhost.
So i really am missing how to get vbox to "rescan" the usb devices of the host.

Did you try a reboot of the Host yet?

I tried that earlier, since when i first used it and the phone did show up in XP and XP popped up the new hardware found dialog, the box was freshly booted.
I will attempt another reboot, but so far it seems any device i unplug while VB is running gets removed, but does not come back.

I plugged in the phone before grub even booted the kernel, because i think that's how early i had it plugged in when i first had it working.
The phone showed up, and i captured it for XP.

Unfortunately, it seems the effort will not pay out, as i can not actually use this setup to flash the phone.
I unplugged it and plugged it back in, gone again, and the problem is the phone will reboot in the flash process into another mode, if the (host?) OS forgets the device meanwhile, i would have to snapshot the guest, reboot the host, hope the phone stays in the proper mode, log in and resume the guest with the phone hopefully still in the right mode...

I guess that's "a little" overly optimistic.
If i can't unplug and replug the device on the running host, then this is not going to work out.
At least i can use other usb devices that way in PUEL now.

I guess what's left is to ask what the typical behaviour with VB 3.0.10 PUEL in karmic is, if unplugging and replugging should work, then i could look into making this work here too.

Solution: reboot WITHOUT the far too often mentioned usbfs mounting in /etc/fstab

Now i can unplug and replug to my heart's content.

Strange, because my karmic doesn't need that entry. I haven't needed that line in fstab since they changed the udev rules, and that was before Jaunty was released.

Right, i should have never used it, i had something else still twisted between uninstalling OSE and installing PUEL that kept me from having USB working, so i ended up with that line on a working PUEL that did not need it, but since i had something else wrong, i would say i fixed it and tried the line at the same time.
A case from changing two things at once masking the truth, in my mind the line worked and gave me USB, when in reality it was hindering unplugging/replugging working.

Thanks for allowing me to waste your time, your question about rebooting at least made me think about the process of "now it's here, now it's not" some more when the devices were all back, and i looked at what might interfere, and i recalled a note about karmic not needing the entry. (when i tried it w/o the fstab entry i did not have a working vboxusers group, i had one i manually created with OSE (before i picked up on OSE vs PUEL), so dpkg -i vb-puel.deb skipped creating a system group by that name, the real fix was uninstalling PUEL, removing the group, and allowing the installer to create it, usb has worked ever since, aside the interference from usbfs in the replugging process, i just happened to fix the install and made the fstab entry at the same time (the link directing me to the PUEL .debs had it at the end))
