Tool to manage size of virtual hard disk
I think vbox is mature enough to provide a reliable tool to resize all kind of files like vdi, vmdk etc...easy and intuitive. For example now it cant resize vmdk files.

Re: Tool to manage size of virtual hard disk
The manual, section 8.24, says 'compacting' only works for VDI, and 'resizing' (meaning 'expanding') only works for VDI and VHD.
That they were able to expand VHDs also means they must have thought about expanding VMDKs too, but something stopped them. Maybe they will one day, maybe there's a problem, maybe the lawyers said no: VMDK is a VMware format, after all, though now open source. Maybe the paying Oracle customers haven't cared yet to modify VMDKs. (< this last one, most likely)
Search the Bugtracker for a previous request and add your voice, or start a new request if you can't find an existing request. But don't hold your breath waiting. There are ways to modify the final result of a VMDK, if not the file itself. VMware tools perhaps, a new VMDK and an in-the-guest clone, etc.

Maturity has nothing to do with anything. The financial justification is what will matter.
