Add blacklist for problematic USB devices (#18883)

Post by hexaae »

ModEdit; related ticket: #18883: Issue with USB joystick SPEEDLINK COMPETITION PRO
See this case: https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/18883
if you have the VBox's USB module installed, when enumerating over HID some devices at launch strange things can happen like PC freezing or incorrect device detection forcing you to unplug the device, even before you start a VM.
A blacklist is required IMHO, if not present already.

Have you discussed this in the forum yet? Perhaps a discussion in "Using Virtualbox" might help you to figure out exactly what happens and how to fix the problem without a blacklist that may never get programmed into Virtualbox. (The developers only have time to work on things that the paying Oracle customers pay them to work on, and we free users get to benefit. They've said they don't have any leftover time to do things that don't fit in with the paying customers' requirements.)

"Where should I post it?". You already did, and you created a ticket for it.
"No help?". What else are you expecting? What exactly can we do about the situation?

The problem seems to me that it's with the device, not with the software...
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

Wondering when 'hexaae' would check in...

Sure there's been help, you know, like in the post you received as a response to yours? Try reading what people write when you ask a question.

Hexaae, read more carefully, please, for the sake of people who will answer your questions.

Yes it's probably with the device itself (or Windows itself) and happens exactly when enumerating connected USB devices, if that specific device is connected.
As I've written into the ticket, SDL author was a very kind developer and after my report he added it to the list of blacklisted devices: https://hg.libsdl.org/SDL/rev/64d32e614d64
SDL library as you know is widely used in many programs (including Steam etc)....
Probably there is no other solution for VBOX too, but as far I can understand a blacklist for buggy devices (some can even freeze Windows in some circumstances) is not in its to-do list...?

Sorry if I'm new to the vbox community and don't know yet "usual paths" to report an issue and/or discuss a feature...

I don't think that such an option exists at the moment. It could be made into reality if there is a demand, but I don't think I've seen such a "rogue" device in the past.

As you're aware any new feature addition has to be carefully weighted for its benefits-provided vs. potential-unwanted-behavior, plus new-introduced-bugs. Thankfully, I'm not the one making that decision.

And yes, I'm familiar with SDL, mainly through MAME. :)

...Another workaround fix for this buggy controller from HWiNFO author!

Hope to see this blacklisting implemented also in VBox USB module one day! ;)

Someone knows if "USB module" uses SDL ? Because in this case, with next 2.0.11 it should auto-fix this problem...

No, it doesn't. Think about it for a minute. What's common between the two?
