Re: SSO + old nick names

I appreciate the fact that everybody here is a volunteer but that thing about not being able to use my old nick name without an administrator's involvement makes contributions (especially bug reports) difficult when I don't get any response to my PM within 6 weeks. :(

I really don't want to choose another nick.

Additionally I'd suggest to make the helpful post viewtopic.php?f=9&t=8888&start=150#p334053 better findable for anybody (On other forums I have seen important posts marked as "sticky", so they always were diplayed at the top).
And btw: a search for SSO did not reveal anything at all.

I'm not quite sure I understand the relationship between your nickname, filing bug reports and not getting any response for 6 weeks. Your last post was 6 years ago. Could you elaborate a little bit?

As for Stickies, of course there are. You'll see plenty of them. If it is worth making a sticky about the names of the admins, I'm not sure, as you can always send a message and select a group; admins.

Finally, if you used the forums' search ability to search for "SSO", it won't get you far, you're right. That's a limitation of the search engine (TLAs), but you could use Google and search for "SSO site:forums.virtualbox.org".

Thank you for the kind reply. I somehow assumed "everybody" is aware of this issue.

To elaborate:
  • I can login to the forum using my email-address just fine :) (I am definitely no regular contributor)
  • When I try to file a bug report or to comment on one the SSO system (seemingly the same page as to access the forums) requires me to choose a nick ("can not be changed afterwards") and won't let me proceed past this point. (The screenshot apparently doesn't display): Image
  • I cannot choose my long standing nick "already in use" and am told to contact "the administrators"
  • In early July I encountered this for the first time, searched and according to one post sent a PM to "frank" - no reaction - and I forgot about it (no idea what I wanted to do at that time :) )
  • Now one bug I am interested in needs some action - and I am stumped once more
  • Searching the forums again I found the post by Perryg, went ahead to send a PM and discovered that I had already sent one
  • I now sent the same PM to the account "administrator"
I was somewhat in doubt about the whole process, thats why I posted my question/rant/suggestion.

Sometimes the PM was forgotten after reading. The DEVs try to reply in a timely manor but they are people under a lot of work load and things happen. I would send another PM to frank and even klaus as a cc and ask again. You should not just let the process proceed without keeping an eye on it or this kind of thing will not get resolved.

To add to what Perry said, July and August include vacation time, it was the time that saw a rework of major chunks of VirtualBox (audio, new compilers, Qt5), a beta period for 5.1.x and ... the closing of 1742 obsolete bugs, some of them 10 years old! Actually the last one saw about 170 bugs closed per day, on average!!!

So, yes, something must have fallen through the cracks, understandably ;)

Thank you both for the feedback, you gave good advice - just how do I cc someone in a PM? If I add a second nick I am told
You tried to send a private message to too many recipients.

You can just send the same pm more than once.

I've just joined today, mainly to say a huge thank you to those involed with VirtualBox. It's a great tool and I have started to use it almost everyday now.

Thanks so much for making it for free too !

Hello,
this thread looks like it is aimed for communication back to the admins.

I already asked this on info@oracle.com, but have doubts this even gets monitored.
My question regards the SSO:
Last week I changed email address and password for SSO.
This has created a new user, at least partially. On first login after the change I was asked for a nick name. My old nick name ucrasher was reported as in use, so I did choose ucrasher2 in the hope I can fix later.
Now all my bug reports are not visible anymore. Here in the forum it still seems to be ucrasher (right upper corner).
But https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Community shows ucrasher2.

I fear the email address is used as the key into the database? Is there a way to fix this? Would a change back to the old address possible work?
Any better place to ask such questions?

Thanks a million.

Go to memberlist.php?mode=leaders
Pick one of the red names, either frank or klaus and send them a PM explaining the situation.

Anyone one knows how to report this site to Oracle

I think many people saw my recent activities in the thread viewtopic.php?f=1&t=79691. During the posts, I think one of the site operators abused his power as site moderator by using personal abusing word. I reported this to site admin, but it seems this does not work. I know my posts are not appropriate but this operator's reply has gone too far.

Does anyone know how to contact the owning company Oracle for this abuse?

We already checked this report. I do not agree, there was no abuse in any form.

You don't have to be a moderator to use a word. It's not an abuse of power. Every registered user can do it. And "moaning" (because that's what you're referring to) is not an abusive word, BTW. FYI:
The Free Dictionary wrote:moan (mōn)
  • A low, sustained, mournful cry, usually indicative of sorrow or pain.
  • A similar sound: the eerie moan of the night wind.
  • A complaint: his tiresome moans about his boss.
  • To make a sound resembling a moan: A saxophone moaned in the background.
  • To complain, lament, or grieve: an old man who still moans about his misspent youth.
  • To bewail or bemoan: She moaned her misfortunes to anyone who would listen.
  • To utter with moans or a moan.
It would have been an abuse of power if I just banned you for no reason. But I didn't (I didn't even give you a warning that the discussion was not going anywhere). And it's not because I was lacking reasons...

Moving to Merging with "Feedback & comment to the Administrators and Moderators" from "Using VirtualBox", because this is not where it belongs.

Giving my response to this feedback as a mod:

As far as I can see the only person being abusive in that thread is "ssawgift". Admittedly it was not personal abuse (that I noticed), rather it was mere abuse of the software and of Oracle, and a more subtle abuse of the devs: i.e. apparantly the quality of their work declined after they became Oracle employees.

IMHO, if any mistake was made, it was failing to delete all ssawgift's posts as soon as they occurred. They simply don't belong there. Even his first post said nothing of value: just another assertion with no details or substance. Had I been taking the lead in that topic I'd have deleted the entire thread after the third post probably, so Socratis was far more tolerant than I'd have been.

Oh, if there was personal abuse, I would not be tolerant. At all.
mpack wrote:Had I been taking the lead in that topic I'd have deleted the entire thread after the third post probably
The lead? In the "Discuss 5.1.6"? I didn't even know I had it ;)

I couldn't delete or lock that specific thread. It's about a specific release. Were it standalone, I definitely would have locked it. Imagine then what I'd hear about "moderators' abuse". I believe I let him enough so that others can understand quite clearly what we're talking about. At the end, you wanted to delete his messages and Lou wanted him banned :D
