There's lots of folks running 11 in Virtualbox sans vhdx now. So not true is the above statement in Virtualbox at this time.

If 11 moves to a state where it cares about or even knows what disk container format it's stored in, the devs will add such support.

"Gen1/Gen 2" is purely MS Hyper-V terminology, so not directly applicable to other virtualisation software. Standard Windows 11 installation, including mainstream and all current Insider Builds only care about the 'hardware spec' visible to the installer.
