Tighter control of Headless VMs

Post by Royce »

This would bring VBox one step closer to the likes of Hyper-V and other 'server' type hypervisors.

I'd really like to see the ability to define a VM as a headless VM.
Such a VM would always do the following:
  • Always start headless - no possible way to do anything but!
  • Always remain running in the background if the VM window was displayed via the 'Show' button - ie. no popup menu on window close.
At the moment the above can be managed manually via correct operation of the VBox UI. Doing it wrong however could have serious impacts to the guest OS - eg: guest being paused while waiting for a response on the close window popup menu.

I'm sure this would be a relatively simple implementation as it's just specifying rules for the VBox UI. It could be enabled via extradata if that shortened the development lead time. Auto start/stop works so well and this is the missing piece of that puzzle.

Very interesting concept! I have a guest I always want headless, too. Have to use a modified shortcut now.
To get the developers to see your idea, post it on the Bugtracker as an enhancement.
