Add send magic sysrq to menu of vm alongside CTRL-ALT-DEL

Postby ohRawoh » 13. Sep 2011, 12:07

Hello,

I'd like to suggest an addition to the menu bar of a linux guest vm. I have in mind menu items for the magic sysrq keys. Currently there are key sequences like CTRL-ALT-DEL and CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE in the vm machine menu. The magic sysrq could be grouped in a sub menu because there are 20+ keys that could come after an ALT-PRTSC.

Right now they cannot be send because they are captured by a linux host. However they would be really extremely useful in linux vms for things like kernel module development and debugging or just trying to sync the filesystems after a freeze.

More info on magic sysrq keys are here or can be found in your local kernel sources in the documentation directory. kernel.org is currently down.

Thanks
Max.

On linux host, one can add desktop menu entries, that send the keystrokes to the guest. Otherwise you might want to make a small app/shellscript, that does the same. The key command is

VBoxManage controlvm [vbox-name] keyboardputscancode 1d 38 54 [request type press/release] d4 b8 9d

See also http://www.halfdog.net/Misc/TipsAndTricks/VirtualBox.html#MagicSysrq for some additional info.
