Integrating VirtualBox guest additions upstream

Post by Technologov »

hi all !

I believe that there is a sense in pushing VBox Linux additions into upstream X.org: namely the VBox graphics driver and VBox Mouse driver.

By doing so, we will evetually have VBox supported out-of-the-box even on LiveCDs, and during install stage !

Additionally, by going this way, we can receive support for BSD and Solaris guest additions from open-source community for free. (Solaris and BSD UNIX uses X.org too)

The downside:
Inability to change the VBox graphics and mouse drivers interface between host and guest. This means that future versions of VBox must stay compatible with 1.3.x in this regard.

What do you think about it? Do you want me contacting X.org ?

I think it's too early for that. First the interfaces have to be hardened with better backwards compatibility. VBox 1.4 is a huge step in that direction but we're still not there.
