Test build - changes list/info/page

Post by AndyCot »

It would be very nice to have some way of getting or obtaining the changes that are included in the nightly builds compared to the latest official release in the case of the latest test builds. This could be some SVN command, some txt file in the installer or something else.

If possible (which it may not be), it would be very nice to have some way of getting or obtaining the changes that are included in the nightly builds compared to the latest official release in the case of the latest development snapshots.

This way if someone does download the test build or dev snapashot they can see where the changes are in case they need / want the change or to test the change and give feedback if they want on the change(s).

Looks like this has been put in the bit bucket.

No, more like we forgot about it. The devs don't come on the forum almost at all, since these are user-to-user forums for free Virtualbox users who are not entitled to any dev support since they didn't pay for it. (Not that an individual user reasonably would: support starts at $1220: oracle store)

You could try politely asking the devs on the IRC if they have such a list of changes, and patiently waiting since they are very busy, again politely bumping after a few weeks if they don't immediately respond.

In principle the changes should be documented in the manual which is included in the packages (as usual in the changelog sections). However this largely depends on who made the change, and on the current workload. With high workload the probability of providing immediate changelog entries is decreasing drastically, but even if not then it can be forgotten. Then it will be noticed some days before the release, but then there will be often no test build update any more.

I can see that this can be improved, but we're humans, too.

Just to mention it: if the changelog entry has been added then it might not show up in the test builds immediately. The documentation is built asynchronously, and if it's not ready by the time the respective build is checking for latest documentation then the previous docs will be shipped. For proper releases this isn't the case (there the builds are waiting for the exact documentation revision), but for test builds we're consider this a bearable loss which speeds up our build system a lot.

Does anyone know if either of the following run guests at normal speed with Hyper-V enabled, like 6.1.30 did?

Yes, I know. And no, none of those have the fix yet. We'll get to uploading new test builds eventually, but it's crazily busy at the moment.

Putting out the fires never stop in such a huge codebase.

Good luck and look after yourself.
