The message "VirtualBox 4.3.x is no longer supported!" did appear in September 2016

The dates are correct. Official support for VirtualBox 4.3 ended in December 2015. There were three more minor releases after that, but that didn't change the official support status in any way. Much like Microsoft releasing occasional updates to Windows XP doesn't magically make XP into a supported product.
