Hi, I had the same issue today on a macbook pro 2018 running catalina 10.15 with the same version of virtualbox, 4096 mb for memory and 20 GB of space with both ubuntu 20 and 19. Disabling audio in vm manager was a good temporary work around, but it seems like this might be a bigger issue.

Hi, I've encountered this issue running Knoppix after updating to VBox 6.1. I was able to fix it by changing the audio driver to Sound Blaster or Intel HD Audio without disabling audio. Seems the ICH AC97 is the only one causing problems. MacOS 10.15.6

I'm having this exact same issue. Trying to install Ubuntu, but doesn't seem to run using audio (tried two of the three options of soundcard type). Only working solution was to disable audio completely.....I'll try turning audio back on after installation and report back.......quite an issue seeing as Ubuntu is a recognised preset (Mac Mojave host)

If the last line of the vbox.log cuts out at "checking audio input permissions" like the posted log snippet above, that is a known issue with Mac OS for now. Disable audio in the guest's Audio settings to get the guest to run. I think the devs are working on it or waiting for Apple to fix something.

In case anyone still comes here with the mac audio problem, it seems to be fixed by upgrading to the latest release (6.1.18 r142142).

I have this problem with VirtualBox 6.1.26 r145957on MacOS 11.6 Big Sur.

Ubuntu reproducibly hangs at the login screen when audio is enabled. The problem does not exist when audio is disabled. The log shows as its last line before the crash CoreAudio: macOS 10.14+ detected, checking audio input permissions. The window doesn't disappear when the hang happens, but i can't select anything in it and if I try to click the x to initiate a shutdown it stays pressed, but the shutdown window doesn't appear.

Edit: This is with AC97 audio. It seems to work with Intel HD audio.
