Booting Windows 10/64-bit BSOD

Post by PDX_Racer »

To see if my current VirtualBox problems are related to an older VM, OS update, or new machine, I decided to download the current W10 installer disc image, create a new W10 VM.

No joy.

Booting the W10 CD gives me a BSOD with various errors with 0xc000021A and KERNEL DATA INPAGE ERROR being two that I've screen-captured. Other times, I get VM screen of colored blocks.

I did recently upgrade my computer from a late 2016 MacBook Pro to a new 16" MacBook Pro - but I've upgraded machines in the past with no problems to VirtualBox. I've tried:
* Reinstalling MacOS X Catalina (and getting the latest virtualization update)
* Installing the latest VirtualBox 6.1.12 (and uninstalling/installing it and rebooting)
* Downloading the latest Windows 10 installation media (SHA256 verifies it was correctly downloaded)

Still no joy.

Why is VB suddenly unable to even correctly boot the Windows 10 64-bit installer CD, or run existing VMs that have worked fine for years?

I just tried the same (boot from a confirmed installation ISO) with Ubuntu 19.10 Desktop.

Also no joy.

"Sorry Ubuntu 19.10 has encountered a serious problem."

So - it doesn't seem to be just Windows 10 - my entire VirtualBox (or computer...) now doesn't run VMs correctly.

I am no Mac guru, but I believe I've read that Catalina 10.15.6 has some issues that make Virtualbox incompatible for now.

Read through the first page or two of the Mac Hosts forum to get an idea.

Those issues are presumably solved with the macOS Catalina 10.15.6 Supplemental Update from 2020-08-12, and PDX_Racer already has it installed (19G2021).

Update: apparently, the reason for the failure is that there is an incompatibility with MalwareBytes (4.5.14) Malware protection or App Block.

After disabling those options, VirtualBox appears to work correctly - it boots the Windows 10/64-bit DVD image without crashing.
