We have a MacPro 2010 and recently upgraded the OS from High Sierra to Catalina using dosdude1's process. After doing so we are unable to start any virtual machines.
Using VboxManage startvm we get the following message:
Waiting for VM "XXXX" to power on...
VBoxManage: error: The virtual machine XXXX' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1 (0x1)
VBoxManage: error: Details: code NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005), component MachineWrap, interface IMachine
And when doing it from the GUI we get the following dialog:
Did anyone experience something similar?
Unable to start virtual machines after upgrade to Catalina

Re: Unable to start virtual machines after upgrade to Catalina
The root cause might well be the 'hack' that has taken place to enable MacOS OS 10.15 (Catalina) to be installed on hardware Apple never intended it to run on. A 'call' to the developer of the hacking software might clarify whether or not it could have an adverse impact on other software that needs to 'inject' system changes into the OS.

Good call. Will ask him. Thank you!multiOS wrote:The root cause might well be the 'hack' that has taken place to enable MacOS OS 10.15 (Catalina) to be installed on hardware Apple never intended it to run on. Re: Unable to start virtual machines after upgrade to Catalina
Collin does not seem to be answering his emails. Any other suggestions? It does not seem to be related to the upgrade as everything seems to work. I also have Parallels and VMWare and both also seem to work fine and the virtual machines start fine in Catalina. I also see that the KEXTs load fine. Here is the output of kextstat:multiOS wrote:The root cause might well be the 'hack' that has taken place to enable MacOS OS 10.15 (Catalina) to be installed on hardware Apple never intended it to run on. Re: Unable to start virtual machines after upgrade to Catalina
If you can post a copy of the Vbox.log for a/the problem VM, 'we' could take a look and see what indicators there are of the problem and, hopefully, point to a solution. I could also compare your log with one from a Catalina setup without the added 'Catalina Patcher' to see if it highlights any obvious differences.
Please zip the log and upload it using upload attachment Tab.

Re: Unable to start virtual machines after upgrade to Catalina
That is an even stranger thing. I had tried to look at the logs before but none is generated. I checked the permissions on the folders and it seems they are correct. And yet, no logs are even created by attempting to start the VM either via command line or the GUI.multiOS wrote:If you can post a copy of the Vbox.log for a/the problem VM, 'we' could take a look and see what indicators there are of the problem and, hopefully, point to a solution. Re: Unable to start virtual machines after upgrade to Catalina
I finally had time to go back to Mojave and can confirm that something with the upgrade process to Catalina on unsupported hardware breaks VirtualBox. Once back to Mojave everything works well again.
