kernel panic launching/resuming VM - OSX Catalina, MBP16"

Posted: 13. Dec 2019, 07:23
by corelanc0d3r
Hi,

I have recently purchased a brand new MacBookPro 16", running OSX Catalina (fully up-to-date).
I am experiencing intermittent (yet frequent) kernel panic crashes when launching/resuming VMs, especially my Windows10 VM seems to be affected / causing the issue.
No interaction is needed to trigger the crash, just launching the VM often causes the OS to freeze and crash.

I've been experiencing the issue on 6.014, and I'm still seeing the issue after upgrading to 6.1.0 r135406 (Qt5.6.3)

I am attaching the kernel panic log

please kindly let me know what I can do to help troubleshoot the issue.

I am relying on virtualization software to do my job, so I am looking forward to getting the issue resolved. (and as a happy virtualbox user, I'd prefer not to migrate to VMWare at this point)

thanks

Re: kernel panic launching/resuming VM - OSX Catalina, MBP16"

This is a relatively common problem with a MacBook Pro host. You'll find many other posts about this.
I have been experiencing kernel panics since 10.14 by simply firing up a VM, with any version of VB (I have a MBP 2018). I have mostly linux VMs and docker. Crashing does not seem to be linked to a particular guest flavor.
Same as you, no interaction is needed to trigger the crash: just launching the VM causes the OS to freeze and crash about 30% of the times.

I'm experiencing exactly the same thing. Didn't have the problem on my 2015 MBP 15" running Catalina and VBox 6.0.14. Migrated to MBP 16" via Time Machine and all seemed well. Then I upgraded my VBox to 6.1.0 and everything has started blowing up. Screen freezes, fans spin up really fast, and then machine shuts down. Restart posts the "shut down because of a problem" dialog. Upon inspection, the kernel panic dialog matches the address mappings exactly as what @corelanc0d3r posts. My kext list is slightly different, but it's the same list as what I've had for a year or more.

Re: kernel panic launching/resuming VM - OSX Catalina, MBP16"

Hi, I found a way to make VirtualBox usable on macOS 10.15.2, change your Graphic Controller (VM - Settings - Display - Graphics Controller) to VBoxVGA instead of VMSVGA, it will complain of Invalid settings detected at the bottom but go ahead and always shutdown you VM, DO NOT SAVE state. There seems to be an issue related to the graphic driver.
Thanks
Jean-François

JiF_Brodeur,
Please do not copy/paste a solution that might have worked for you, in every single thread that mentions a crash. You have posted in 10 (TEN) threads already. Unless you've done a thorough analysis of the crashes, please do not post everywhere, you might be throwing people off.

Hi @socratis, sorry if my posts have caused any issue, I was just trying to help, I shared my experience with users who thus far did not get much on trying to use VB on macOS, apart from remove third party kext and give us feedback. I did roughly 10 tests and the only configuration that worked is the one I shared.
Thanks
Jean-François

do we have some official acknowledgement from the devs that the issue is being looked after?
I'm at a point where I need to decide to either wait for the issue to be resolved (but then I would appreciate to get some kind of timing/prioritization), or moving away from virtualbox (because I need to be able to do my job)

thanks

I'll throw in my "me too".

Latest Catalina, VirtualBox 6.1

Kernel panics every time a guest is launched. Last time, it wiped all my Safari open pages and could not retrieve them from history.

Changing graphics controller in settings to VBoxVGA as someone suggested has made no difference.

Hi, @corelanc0d3r there is indeed an open ticket on that specific issue, the development team is amassing as much information as they can at the moment. You can follow it https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/19007
@Starion, sorry my suggestion did not help, I'll be on the lookout for a change in status for the ticket.
Thanks
Jean-François

Hi Jean-François,

are we sure that is the issue we are seeing?
In any case, it looks like the issue in the ticket was reported 2 months ago, but I don't really see a lot of activity on the ticket, so I'm not sure they are "amassing" information, or have a clear idea on getting the issue fixed.

No it's not. This thread deals with a Host kernel panic, the other is a VM crash. Not that much related AFAIK, I see no commonalities...

Jean-François, please read the logs/signs carefully. I told you that unless you're sure about the sources, do not put all the problems in the same "bag", you might be throwing people off course, confusing them. You have a completely different problem. You've made your post, you posted your logs. That should be enough for the developers, thank you.

  1. We're talking about the VERR_PGM_HANDLER_NOT_FOUND issue, OK? Not yours. Just want to be clear on this...
  2. We're still trying to find the common denominator that causes the VERR_PGM_HANDLER_NOT_FOUND error, 'fth0' has a really good hunch and analysis.
  3. We don't know what the developers are doing. If you want to find out, you got to read the tea leaves...
  4. You want to talk about a 2-month ticket? That's all you got? :?
I see your statement and I'm raising your bet. :P
Come and talk to me after 3 Olympiads! :D

ouch - ok, let's see if solving the issue will beat a vmware trial license...

You realize that this is not a race really, right? You're free (freedom) to use this free (freedom/price) software, you're free (freedom) not to use it. No one is forcing you to endure the OSS nature of VirtualBox. Availability of choices is what defines "free", as in freedom... ;)

wow - chill - didn't mean to make it sound offensive or anything like that - I just need something that works, free or not free, OSS or not OSS... and I don't mind paying for it.

I understand things can break (free or not free, OSS or not), all I'm asking for is that the issue will get resolved ... and right now I don't even know if the issue is being looked after. (I saw things like "we don't have a MBP16" " , which don't really sound reassuring).

Anyway, I need to be able to do my job, so I don't really have a choice here.

I am also facing crash on 10.15.2 on a 16" MBP with virtualbox 6.1.0

I have not faced a single crash when i started the vms in headless mode. But connecting to a headless windows 10 system results in really slow gui. Remote desktop works better, but is still not ideal.

On a different note, I have noticed that on this version of Virtualbox, seamless mode is not working for my Windows 10 guests for both 32 and 64 bit editions. Is there any way to fix that?
