Trouble hooking up wireless printer to winXP VM w/2.0

I finally gave up trying to get a boot camp partition setup as a virtual machine. So I created a new VM and installed WinXP. Things went ok for the most part. Had a little trouble getting the 2 networks going and USB devices. But once I figured them out it was not bad.

So this evening, I thought I would install the SW for my new HP J6400 wireless printer. The SW install went fine, but when it came time to setup the printer wirelessly, you first have to hook it up with a USB cable. I did this and enabled the usb port correctly. If I open the usb icon on the bottom right of the VM window, it even says that it is for an HP J6400 and says that it is active. But at this point everything comes to a halt. The installation presents an animated diagram showing the printer, and the usb cable and a computer. If things are going correctly, the animation should show "dots" going over the cable to and from the printer. At least that is what happened when hooking it up to a regular computer. But in this case, there was no animation at all. I let it sit like that for a good half hour. But I got nothing. It just sat there. There is an info panel within the animated window saying that instructions of how to connect wirelessly are being sent over to the printer. I also remember when hooking it up to a non-virtual machine that it asked for my wireless passwd at some point within this dialog. But it did not do that either.

I made sure that both the ethernet and Wireless ports were working through to the VM. I initially connected with ethernet and then pulled the ethernet cable and restarted the VM and made sure I could get out the the network via Airport. This all worked.

Has anyone else had any experience trying to hook up a wireless printer in this way? I do have the wireless printer hooked up OK in my boot camp WinXP partition and it works just fine.

BTW: I forgot to mention that I can print OK with a USB cable attached, if I get out of the installation mode.

I have never tried wireless printing in VBox.

but...

Have you set up a USB filter for your Printer?

Yes, I have setup a USB filter. But not sure I set it up correctly or not. The USB filter window shows an HP Officejet j6400 Series 0100 as being enabled. If I double click on it, I get VID/PID of 03F0/3312, Rev, Manufacturer & product of 0100, HP, Officejet j6400 series, A serial number of MY8402B27R056F. The port number is blank and the remote setting is set to No (perhaps this is part of the problem?).

Also, the network settings for en1: Airport are:

Adapt. type: PCnet-FAST III (Am79C973)
Attached to: NAT
Network Name: Grayed out
MAC address: 0800278FD809 (Generated)
Cable Connected: checked.

I figured out how to get around this issue. After reading:

http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic. ... ht=printer

on how to hook up a network printer, this seems to be an acceptable alternative to trying to get a wireless printer working from a windows Guest. Just enable printer sharing on your Mac OS host system. Then go into the Printers and Faxes menu on the Win guest. Add a network printer and when it is trying to find the printer driver, insert your printer SW install disk and click on the "have disk" button and install the printer driver. Answer yes to the question if this is to be the default printer and you are done.
