Crashing constantly on MacBook Pro 2019 (latest)

Post by dachew57 »

We are using VirtualBox 5.2.30 on Mac OS 10.14.5 - kext extensions are enabled. We have almost zero stability: Machine will hard crash when opening VirtualBox, when starting a VM, when saving state, or most often - when restoring from a saved state. Our VM is a Windows Server 2016 machine:

Code: Select all

systeminfo | findstr OS
OS Name: Microsoft Windows Server 2016 Standard
OS Version:                10.0.14393 N/A Build 14393
OS Manufacturer:           Microsoft Corporation
OS Configuration:          Standalone Server
OS Build Type:             Multiprocessor Free
BIOS Version: innotek GmbH VirtualBox, 12/1/2006
No other kext's are installed:

Code: Select all

kextstat | grep -v com.apple
Index Refs Address Size Wired Name (Version) UUID <Linked Against>

This configuration worked great on all previous versions of MacBook pro's including the late 2018 and even back to the late 2013 model. Here's a snapshot from the attached crash report that I think is most relevant:

Code: Select all

"otherString" : "\n** Stackshot Succeeded ** Bytes Traced 105440 **\n",
  "panicFlags" : "0x102",
  "panicString" : "panic(cpu 0 caller 0xfffffff00a8dcc60): macOS panic detected\nDebugger message: panic\nMemory ID: 0x6\nOS version: 16P5200\nmacOS version: 18F203\nKernel version: Darwin Kernel Version 18.6.0: Thu Apr 25 21:46:37 PDT 2019; root:xnu-4903.261.4~1\/RELEASE_ARM64_T8010\nKernelCache UUID: DC9A6AF1
We've tried VirtualBox 5.2.26, .28, .30, and the latest 6.0.8. All exhibit the same behavior.

6.0.8's video for Windows is really terrible BTW...

Has anybody else seen this problem? It is happening across all of our new laptops.

We've found that starting the machine headless seems to be more stable. Seems like the issue might be related to the graphics driver. Here's from a functional setup:

I've tried a completely fresh rebuild of the OS on my laptop (aka, I formatted the SSD and reinstalled Mojave). Things were looking okay - I was able to suspend & resume a couple times, but on the 3rd try, my laptop rebooted.

Nothing else? Just Mojave and VirtualBox?
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

Yes - a completely free re-install of Mac OS, then VirtualBox (+allow kext from recovery mode). Copy VM image to machine, bring it up, suspend + resume a couple of times, and then observe system crash.

I have the same issue. Sometimes virtualbox itself crashes without crash my laptop, sometimes laptop just crash and reboots. Both latest virtualbox 5.2.* version and 6.0.* version have same issue. I'm using centos7 as guest os.

Code: Select all

Hardware Information:
    MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2018-2019)

        BANK 2/ChannelB-DIMM0 - 16 GB DDR4 2400  ok

Re: Crashing constantly on MacBook Pro 2019 (latest)

Post by dachew57 »

That's what's happening across all 25 of our developer machines. We're looking at moving away to another product like Parallels. Hopefully the VirtualBox team is working on this issue and will have a fix soon. Nobody wants to retool our process and rebuild our Vagrant box images for Parallels... :shock:

Yup, there absolutely is an issue with VB on the latest macOS host + Windows guest right now.
I'm trying to run the Windows 10 Enterprise evaluation VM on macOS Mojave with the latest VirtualBox 6.0.8 and I'm getting kernel panics left and right from org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxDrv. I'm using "MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2018)" with the Intel i9 and 32GB of RAM.

Changing the network adapter from NAT to Bridged Adapter let me boot the VM and use it for about 30 minutes, but after I left the VM unattended for about fifteen minutes, the VM's display went black and a kernel panic followed after I began interacting with the window again. If the network adapter is set to NAT, it's an instant kernel panic after I start the VM.

The "MSP Tools Driver" refers to a MSP-EXP430G2ET devkit that I've got connected. The latter two are a USB-C display and wired ethernet provided by an LG display. If by "do they install custom drivers" you mean have I explicitly installed some drivers, then the answer is no.

I unfortunately already purged VB so that I could work, but the kextstat command produced pretty much the same output seen in every other poster's message where there is only VB's kexts.

There are 12 developers in our group with the exact same problem of random kernel panics on the newer 2019 MacBooks , especially when resuming a VM with saved state , still happening with latest Mojave 10.14.6 update from yesterday and VB 6.0.10 .... the older MacBooks were fine :(

Hi,

I'm seeing the same crashing on my mac as well.
It is a 2018 with 10.14.5 and VB 6.10.

Please let me know if you need any log type of debug.

@Frank12420
What do you mean by "random kernel panics"? Also, a "me too" doesn't really help. A crash report could potentially help a lot more, in hopes that we find something in common that causes this.

@debu
Same as above...

There have been two confirmed crashes with Accessibility-related triggers. See "Virtualbox crashes when selecting another window" and "VBox Manager crashes when shutting VMs, accessibility zoom related (#17842)", specifically the summary of the collected reports. When presented with that, a developer was able to quickly replicate the problem...

So, we (mostly you actually) need to work together and find the common denominator that's causing this.

@socratis , By "random kernel panics", I mean we are happily attempting using VB and then without any deterministic pattern the MacBook panics and reboots. The panics happen only when using VB. The panics seem to occur mostly during VB VM startup, but that is not always the case as other devs have reported panics while using Eclipse or debugging in the VM. A "me too" is helpful in my opinion since it adds confirmation & validation that multiple disparate individuals are experiencing this issue. The kernel panic I receive is the same each this happens. My panic using 6.0.10 appears to match the panic posted by @jhkl, thus I chimed into this thread hoping to raise awareness that this issue appears to be continuing. The referenced known "accessibility" issues do not appear to be related to the issue @jhkl or I are reporting. My panic is posted below along with installed kernel extensions & apps, tell me if any additional information would be helpful.

As a developer you may know that this is the worst case scenario for a crash, right? Non-reproducible crashes are the worst. You got no leads to follow...

You quoted half of my message. This was my whole message, read the 2nd part:
socratis wrote:Also, a "me too" doesn't really help. A crash report could potentially help a lot more, in hopes that we find something in common that causes this.
Well, actually you did... ;)

You seem to have a *lot* of applications that could be troublesome, and several kexts loaded. I'd start by cleaning up the system, to the point that's as close to a virgin one as possible. I cannot (and would not) attempt to replicate your setup. Besides the obvious kext-installing programs, I see Caffeine, Charles, WireShark, Stay that seem that could be interfering and triggering the issue.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
