What's your guest os?
Where do you try to switch to 1680x150? Why?
What modes (windowed/fullscreen/seamless) did you try?
Can you confirm the install of the additions succeeded?
Did you reboot your (windows) guest?
Did you have a look into the VB FAQ or the first couple of pages of the manual?

let's see ... (looking into the cristall ball)
... you have the virtual machine configured to enable USB and possibly usb 2.0
... in windowed mode you see some USB devices mentioned in the drop-down box, when you click on the tiny usb symbol in the bottom line, but they are all grey.
... the USB device you want to use is also listed there? (looking closer into the ball ... yes.)
Solution: unmount the device in OS X but leave it connected. Then you can claim it for the guest.
Unmount it in the guest when done. It will likely be "reclaimed" by OS X automatically.
It's all in the manuals, aquarius

no no, I wasn't able to see any device listed, because the tiny usb symbol was also grey. I had the message, when I put the mouse on it : "USB controler is disactivated (in french on my VB obviously)"
Okay, so I shut of WinXP, turned on the USB controller into the VM, (That's what is missed to do) and now, it works for some USB devices (iSight, Canon scanner,...) but not for an USB key or for my SDcard reader (Belkin). But anyway, it's improved.
