[Solved] Can't start guest

Post by jamat13 »

One fine day I started a guesy as usual on my midi 2011 iMac 27 running High Sierra and was greeted with this

The virtual machine 'jam' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1 (0x1).

Result Code:
NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component:
MachineWrap
Interface:
IMachine {5047460a-265d-4538-b23e-ddba5fb84976}

After some googling I removed the app using [remove] in the dmg
Removed Library/Virtual Boc
Removed 'Virtual Box VMs'
Installed from the DMG
Installed a guest
start the guest
no logs
same error as before

Short of re-install OSX what can I do?

If you are running VirtualBox on a MAC running OSX, why did you post in this forum VirtualBox on Windows hosts?

We need to see two things... firstly the VBox.log file for the aborted attempt to start the guest and secondly the output of running the command:

ls -laed@ \
  / \
  /Applications \
  /Applications/VirtualBox.app \
  /Applications/VirtualBox.app/Contents/MacOS/VirtualBox \
  /Applications/VirtualBox.app/Contents/MacOS/VirtualBoxVM \
  /Applications/VirtualBox.app/Contents/MacOS/VBoxRT.dylib \
  /Library/Application\ Support/VirtualBox \
  /private \
  /private/etc \
  /private/etc/sudoers \
  /private/tmp

-Andy.

This don't match the output from my macOS 10.14.3 (Mojave) installation which shows:
drwxrwxr-x+ 100 root admin 3200 12 Mar 13:19 /Applications 0: group:everyone deny delete
It looks like you may have installed something that has naughtily changed the permissions on the /Applications folder which VirtualBox is not finding to its liking. Known culprits are things like MacPorts and Homebrew. Try resetting the permissions on that folder and see if the situation improves.

Thanks! I would not think of looking at permissions (ownership) of /Applications
Natch that was the issue!
