The solution (workaround) to a laggish guest on Mac host for me was to run VirtualBoxVM.app (not the VB Manager!) in Low Resolution Mode. The solution was given here in topic: VirtualBox runs slow on MacBook Pro 2018 (screen refreshes slow) (cannot post the link, since I am a junior member...) mod edit: the solution seems to be this link: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=90446&start=75#p470879 from "63BottlesOfBeer"
1. Navigate to Apps folder. Choose VirtualBox.app
2. Right click on VirtualBox.app, Show Package Contents.
3. Contents -> Resources -> VirtualBoxVM.app (right click -> Get info)
4. Check the "Open in Low Resolution" checkbox.
5. Run the Virtual Machine in 100% scale mode.
Works very good for me, running Macbook Pro 2015 on external 4k display.

This worked brilliantly for me. A pity you couldn't find the link to postsigismund wrote:The solution (workaround) to a laggish guest on Mac host for me was to run VirtualBoxVM.app (not the VB Manager!) in Low Resolution Mode. Using the Low-Resolution mode makes it better for me, surely. But still laggish beyond proper for work usage.

Going to lock this to stem off Me-Too's. Please make a new topic if you have trouble implementing the fix in the first post or linked topics.
