Maybe I'm not communicating correctly what I want you to do. I want you to "reset" VirtualBox. That means no vboxnet1 adapter. That means a Live DVD. That means assigning the default vboxnet0 adapter to a LiveDVD and getting a start/ping/shutdown log.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

You didn't have a screenshot, but that's fine, don't need one...

That is *definitely* weird! I mean you get an IP you can ping 56.2. I honestly have no clue why you can't ping 56.1. :shock:

Here's my last suggestion:
  • Remove manually each and every HostOnly network. Be left with an empty list.
  • Uninstall VirtualBox.
  • Reboot your OSX.
  • Make sure that the output of "ifconfig -a" does not include anything like that:
    $ ifconfig -a
    ...
    vboxnet0: flags=8943<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,PROMISC,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
    	ether 0a:00:27:00:00:00
    	inet 192.168.56.1 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.56.255
  • Reinstall VirtualBox
  • Create your HostOnly adapter.
  • Try it with the LiveDVD and just one adapter assigned to the HostOnly network.
