[Solved] Failed to attach USB Device to Windows7 Guest

Post by elfarto_1975 »

Please note that i've already tried following all the steps on the USB Troubleshooting guide and i'm coming here in despair :D

I'm running VirtualBox 5.2.22 r 126460 under a Mac OSX Mojave 10.14.1 Host, on a Macbook Air Retina 2018. Matching ExtPack is installed
My guest is running Windows7 x64, Guest Additions are installed (matching the VBox Version) and the VM is configured to use USB3, i've also installed the intel XHCI Drivers to enable the USB3 Controller in WIndows and verified Device Manager correctly identified the controller
I'm trying to use a SecureID Token (Athena IDProtect on the usb devices listing below), which is connected to the "USB-C Digial AV Multport Adapter" on the Mac (it has only two USB-C/Thunderbolt ports) Whenever i try to attach it to the guest VirtualBox displays an overlay error stating "Failed to attach Athena IDProtect Key [2501] to virtual Machine Windows"
In fact the only device i was able to attach to the Guest is "USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter". which yields an Error 29 under Device Manager
I also tried creating new VMs (both windows and Linux) and i'm getting the same error everytime, which makes me think this is a problem with the Host and not with the Guest.

Chipset: ich9
Care to explain why you use a clearly marked as experimental chipset, only to be used with OSX guests? Change it to the default PIIX3 please.
IDE (1, 0): /Applications/VirtualBox.app/Contents/MacOS/VBoxGuestAdditions.iso (UUID: 88446fc3-dec5-4c6e-ae6c-ab1234adbae8)
Remove the GAs CD once you're done installing them. You might run into UUID problems if you upgrade your VirtualBox installation.
USB Device Filters:
<none>
You haven't created a USB filter for your device. You may have read the USB basics and troubleshooting thread, but you may have to read it again more carefully. Create an appropriate USB filter and plug the device in question after you've logged in to the VM.

PS. For future reference, you should completely shut down the VM before grabbing the VBox.log. Then ZIP it before attaching it to your response.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

Thanks for tip, looks like the USB Device needs to be unplugged BEFORE powering up the VM. on that requirement is met (and the filter created), as soon as you plug the device it pops-up on the running VM.
Thanks a lot!

Great, glad you got it going. And thank you for marking the topic as [Solved]... ;)
