[WorksForMe] How to install the Windows 10 ISO

Post by jwsapp »

I just installed VB on my MacBook Pro running Mojave. All's well, but I don't see how to install the Windows 10 ISO I have. I'm sure that I've missed something and feel dumb. I know that, so don't rub it in! Please just walk me through what to do, starting with seeing a window entitled Windows [Running} or Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager.

Thanks

First of all I changed the title of the thread from "OK, I'm lost" to something more meaningful. Please choose a title that summarizes the nature of the problem, not your feelings.

You sound like a fairly new user to VirtualBox. Since you are expected to know some basic terms before we engage in a meaningful discussion, I would suggest to start by reading three small chapters from the User Manual: Or even better, read the whole chapter 1. First steps. Or if you prefer, you can find all of these in a nicely formatted, searchable PDF, by going to the menu Help » Contents.

Actually, I did look at all of that first. I have an empty window. When I try to mount the disk image (Win10_1809Oct_English_x64.iso) I get the folowing message: FATAL: No bootable media found! System halted.

Then that means that the ISO is corrupted. The error message is never wrong; your ISO is not bootable, most probably due to corruption.

You didn't change the defaults from the VM, did you? Except RAM, CPUs, VRAM, 2D/3D acceleration, do not touch any of the other settings unless you know what you're doing.

I made no changes. I got another disk image, but it's corrupted also.

No changes from what exactly?

Where are you getting your ISOs from? Go to the Microsoft website and get a fresh Win10, October 2018 Update, English language ISO. Or, even better, download one of the two below. The links are valid for 24 hours: Once you have it, I'm going to tell you how to calculate the checksum to make sure they're not corrupted.

Glad you finally got it going. Marking as [WorksForMe].
One of the biggest mistake Microsoft is doing, is to not publish any checksums for their ISOs. Unacceptable in my opinion...

Just for completion, and just because I downloaded the two ISOs, and for anyone coming here looking for the checksums:
