[Solved] Install error

Post by drs@dcneuro.net »

I had problems opening VB, some kernel not installed error, so I deleted everything thinking I would get a fresh start. I tried reinstalling v5.2.1. I get the attached error still on a clean install.

As the screenshot is too large, I am copying the message: "The installation failed. The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."

Kindly advise.

Thanks.

There is no 5.2.1, you want to verify that? Before we get to the meat, what's your host running? If it's 10.14 beta, forget it. See "5.2.12 install fails on macOS Mojave (#17805)".

I'm guessing this is supposed to be 5.2.12 (the latest version at the time of writing) as Oracle don't release odd numbered versions.

If you are using High Sierra (10.13.x) then this is a known issue of Apple's making. You need to go into "Security & Privacy" from the System Preferences and allow the installation of software from Oracle then re-run the installer.

I am using 10.13.5. How do I add Oracle software setting and privacy as I do not see any options for this under the privacy tab and I'm not being prompted to add it?

I was able to successfully add the virtual box.app to the accessibility settings, however, it still fails upon installing.

You're not remotely logged in the OSX computer, are you? If not, see:
If that doesn't work, I'll need to see an installer log (as a first step). You might want to print the following steps, or save them in a test file on your desktop, because there are a couple of reboots, and you don't want to go "hunting" in the forums...
  1. Download the latest release, or the latest test build (NOT the development snapshot), if you don't already have them.
  2. Reboot.
  3. Make sure you're part of the "admin" group. If you are logged in with the primary user account/owner, you are part of the admin group.
  4. Mount the DMG from the previous step. Run "VirtualBox_Uninstall.tool". Make sure there are no error messages. If there are, please post them, exactly as they appear.
  5. Reboot.
  6. Mount the DMG from the previous steps. Double-click the "VirtualBox.pkg". As soon as you start the installation, press Cmd+L to show the log. Select "Show All Logs" from the drop-down menu. Before the last step of the installation (Done), click the "Save" in the log window. ZIP and attach that file.
  7. Start VirtualBox. If it crashes, open "Console.app" and look at "~/Library/Logs". Is there a VirtualBox related log with the current date/time? ZIP and attach that file as well.
PS. What does the accessibility settings have to do with it?

I asked for the installer log. You sent me a picture of a failed kext loading...

Did you read the previous links that I gave you? You have to accept Oracle as a developer in the System Preferences.
Jul 2 10:35:28 Aldos-iMac installd[997]: ./postflight: /Library/Application Support/VirtualBox/VBoxDrv.kext
failed to load - (libkern/kext) system policy prevents loading; check the system/kernel logs
        for errors or try kextutil(8).

I thought I did that when I added virtual box to accessibility under privacy in settings. I assume this is not correct. How/where do I add Oracle?

See:

System Preferences -> Security & Privacy then it appears in the bottom half of the "General" tab. If you have done all that then run the command:
sudo kextutil -v -t /Library/Application\ Support/VirtualBox/VBoxDrv.kext
If it tells you anything new then post it here.
