How can I move and use VMs on an external drive

Hi,
I have VirtualBox on a Mac with a small internal SSD. I want to move the 2 VMs I have to an external HDD.
I copied the VM-folder to the external drive and changed the paths to point to the external HDD but once I remove the original folder from the internal SSD, the VMs can not be found.
I tried an alternative by placing an Alias in place of the original "VirtualBox VMs"-folder, but couldn't trick VirtualBox thereā¦
Is there an easy way to move the VMs or do I have to export them? (Anyway, by re-importing the VMs I would place them on my internal disc again, wouldn't I?)
thx for any guidance,
Rob
