Failed to acquire the VirtualBox COM object

Not sure if anyone has seen this before?
Failed to acquire the VirtualBox COM object.

The application will now terminate.

The reason for this error are most likely wrong permissions of the IPC daemon socket due to an installation problem. Please check the permissions of '/tmp' and '/tmp/.vbox-*-ipc/'

Checked permission for tmp folder (no .vbox folder present)

Not until we know at least some details about your system/setup:

    • ls -al /tmp/
ls -al /Applications
kextstat | grep -v com.apple

I forgot to mention - I had Virtual box working before.

HOST Mac mini (Late 2012)
2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

First of all, I should have added a trailing slash at the "ls -al /tmp/". Could you please repeat that command with the trailing slash included? I actually got the details on the link itself instead of the directory, my bad.

Secondly, it seems you've downloaded the whole Apple Store right there, I wouldn't know where to begin troubleshooting any potential conflicts. What I do know for sure it that your permissions are not what they should be. For example, you have several applications that the group is not "admin" or "wheel", but "staff". And in one of them, it's "501", which shouldn't even exist; an installer most probably mixed up the UID (501) with the GID (20). So, I'm not really surprised that the permissions might not be the proper ones in your "/tmp" directory.

Did you remove/disable SIP (System Integrity Protection)?

Yeah sure - I have many interests in life :) No I have not disabled/removed SIP. Not a clue how to do it...

OK - deleted loads of apps today (in case there was a conflict of some sort) and reinstalled Virtualbox...

FIXED IT!

Went to private/tmp and right clicked on folder - get info and changed privileges to read&write :D

Do you see that last "t" in the untouched directory listing? That's called the sticky bit. If you really want to fix the permissions, open up Terminal and issue the command: 
  • sudo chmod 1777 /private/tmp
If you want an explanation of what this does, check out: What is the “t” letter in the output of “ls -ld /tmp”?

It's not the fact that you have a lot of applications that's causing the problem, no. It's the fact that one of these apps' installer somehow messed up, usually due to sloppy programming. The more applications you have, the higher the chances of something going wrong, especially if they're not from reputable software developers. If you should have one application in your arsenal that can fix a lot of "mishaps", it should be Onyx. Free and invaluable...

I also met this trouble one hour ago too.

I removed /tmp/.vbox-*-ipc then executed VirtualBox . The result it became normal.

.vbox-*-ipc means your account name. like as .vbox-john-ipc.
