How do I remove Windows from Virtual Box

Post by Marl »

I have had Windows XP loaded in Virtual Box because my Fujitsu Scanner's software is only available as a Windows app. I have now located Mac compatible software that will operate the scanner although possibly without some operations being available. However I have a Windows 7 laptop that I can use for that purpose if necessary.

How do I uninstall Windows from Virtual Box? Presumably deleting VB won't remove Windows XP.

No, deleting software does not usually delete any data you created. Of course as far as the host OS is concerned, your VMs are data.

To delete a VM, right click it in the VirtualBox manager and choose "Remove". At some point you'll be asked words to the effect of whether you only want to deregister the VM (leaving the data behind), or delete it permanently. Choose the latter. If you already chose the former then you are free to delete the VM folder from the host (<user-home>\VirtualBox VMs\<VM name>). Remember to flush your hosts recycle area too in that case.
