Install Fails

Post by Enol »

Hi there,

I'm trying to install VirtualBox-5.1.14-112924-OSX on macOS 10.12.2 and the Installer fails with the following message:

Code: Select all

Any way around this?

Thanks.

Please list ALL modifications you've done to your system's defaults. These could include (but not limited to): HomeBrew, MacPorts, other open source ports, 3rd party installers, system-wide modifications, custom "umasks", permissions changes, kernel drivers installations, system daemons, etc.

Please be as thorough as possible. Failing in the "postflight" script means one thing: your system is not a standard OSX installation anymore.

Hi socratis,

Thanks for your reply. On top of the standard installation, there's a fruit logo company internal package for compatibility with necessary tools.

Any tips on how to determine (and how to list) these additional components?

I'm not quite sure what that refers to. Can you provide some more details? Can you provide the whole installer.log (zipped)?

I was unable to find logs for this specific package, and the list of components I tried to attach via zipped txt is too big for the maximum size allowed.

Also, I tried installing VirtualBox via Pacifist (bypassing the native installer), imported a VM that used to work and the error yielded is:

Failed to open a session for the virtual machine 7.

The virtual machine '7' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1 (0x1).

Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component: MachineWrap
Interface: IMachine {b2547866-a0a1-4391-8b86-6952d82efaa0}

That company that makes a commercial Unix based OS…

Just reading this again and wondering if the installer log you meant is the one from the VirtualBox failed install.

Yes, I did mean the installer.log from the failed installation. Here's what you do:
  1. Once you start the installer package, press Cmd-L to show the installer log window.
  2. Choose to "Show All Logs" from the detail level drop-down list.
  3. Before you finalize the installation, due to error or not, click "Save" on the installer log window.
  4. ZIP it and attach it to your reply.
  5. Post the output of the commands (from /Applications/Utilities/Terminal):
    • ls -ale@ /
      ls -ale@ /private/tmp

Re: Install Fails

  1. I asked you specifically what's the meaning of "on top of the standard installation there's a fruit logo company" and you came back with "a company that makes a commercial Unix based OS". If you mean Apple, why is that extra from the standard installation? And are you afraid to say plain and clear Apple? Or you mean something else? Please be direct, to the point and exact.
  2. I asked you if you modified your standard OSX installation. You failed to mention TinkerToolSystem, WhatsApp and Crashpad (which came with something else?), to begin with. If you want to continue like this, I don't think that this thread has a future.
  3. You have several non-standard top level directories. I'm really worried about all of them:
    • drwxrwxrwt@ 3 root wheel 102 26 Nov 2015 .TemporaryItems
      drwxr-xr-x 34 root wheel 1156 24 Jan 23:48 AppleInternal
      dr-xr-xr-x 2 root wheel 68 14 Abr 2016 SWE
.TemporaryItems: Really? What's wrong with /tmp? Who or why created that?
    • AppleInternal: A quick search returns results for jailbroken iPhones. Not a good sign.
    • SWE: Nothing... Except SWEden. Even more worrisome. The Swedes have hacked your Mac?
  4. Installation. You said you were running 10.12.2. Not so, you're on 10.12.3, but that's OK, I know they've updated it a few days ago. The thing is that I have to update my VM to re-run the tests. I'll try tonight. I don't think it will make a difference, but until then, my findings:
    Env: COMMAND_MODE=unix2003
Any clue why that variable is set? Do you have iTerm?
In summary
I really don't know what modifications you've done to your system, and you haven't told me too much => I can't propose any solution.
