When starting up Win10 guest on a Mac Mini, every so-often the 2nd screen starts out blank. When I check the View -> Virtual Screen 2 menu, it shows the 2nd screen is enabled. I have to manually select (View -> Virtual Screen 2 -> enable) to get the 2nd screen working. I tried to look through VB log (attachment captures the last time I saw this behavior), but could not get far.
I'm currently running MacOS Sierra on VB 5.1.8 (but this issue has persisted for past several weeks on ElCap and previous release of VB) on a MacMini with 2 Apple Thunderbolt Displays.
Appreciate your help.

Re: Secondary Screen won't activate on startup
1) What does every so often mean? You're not really specific here.Vale46 wrote:every so-often the 2nd screen starts out blank.
2) It is supposed to start as blank, until you log in.
That's an unusually named file... The .HDD points to a Parallels VM, while the {#####} points to a snapshot. Any care to explain how this VM came to be?'/Users/Shared/VirtualBox/Windows 7-0.hdd.0.{5fbaabe3-6958-40ff-92a7-860e329aab41}.hdd'
I'd take that up to 256 MB.00:00:02.165725 VRamSize <integer> = 0x0000000008000000 (134 217 728, 128 MB)
You have assigned all your CPUs to the VM. Re: Secondary Screen won't activate on startup
Thanks Sorcatis for your feedback.
Responses to your questions sequentially:
1. This happens every 3 or 4 times when booting up Win10 guest.
2. You're right, it starts up blank upon startup. What I'm describing is post login when the 2nd screen won't activate.
The odd named file (and hdd extension) comes from the VM that I was using in Parallels. I used that file to convert/create VB VM. Need to figure out if I can convert this file into native VB format. Would that improve performance/reliability?
I have played around with CPU count before. Since most of my work is on Windows, I found assigning both processors to VM results in significantly better performance.
Both screens are run in Full screen mode. Will try assigning more RAM to see if that improves VM performance.

Re: Secondary Screen won't activate on startup
That's the reason I asked for. I'm not sure how their custom graphics card and their additions (if any) could be affecting what you're seeing. Did you uninstall any custom Parallels tools that were maybe installed before you switched to VirtualBox?Vale46 wrote:The odd named file (and hdd extension) comes from the VM that I was using in Parallels. The file format, no. Well, maybe yes, in the long run, because it's the one native to VirtualBox and the one with the best support. However, look at the previous point for performance/reliability.Vale46 wrote:Need to figure out if I can convert this file into native VB format. Would that improve performance/reliability?
That's fine, just be aware that you might potentially hit some snugs. If you do, change the CPUs and see if it fixes that.Vale46 wrote:Since most of my work is on Windows, I found assigning both processors to VM results in significantly better performance.
You should definitely increase the vRAM. Now, this post was not about performance, why are you mentioning it twice in the last two questions? None of the "remedies" mentioned will improve performance, they are meant to address your non-display of the 2nd screen. If performance gets a boost, the merrier.Vale46 wrote:Both screens are run in Full screen mode. Will try assigning more RAM to see if that improves VM performance.

Re: Secondary Screen won't activate on startup
Thanks for your thoughts. My responses are:
1. Prior to migrating Parallels VM to VB, I did uninstall Parallels tools apps.
2. Is there a discussion/thread where I can learn more about converting my VM file from Parallels to native VB format? Any pointers are greatly appreciated.
3. It turns out that my machine (using a 2012 Mac mini) has max. 256MB vRAM available for MacOS of which 128MB is available to VM. So it appears my system is already maxed out.

Re: Secondary Screen won't activate on startup
- OK, fine. Just making sure.
- Look in the user manual: Ch. 5.2 for general information and "Ch. 8.24 VBoxManage clonemedium" for information on how to do the conversion. Or you could use CloneVDI.
Do NOT expect any spectacular performance differences (and I'm bringing it up, because you bring it up). - If you enable 3D acceleration, the maximum vRAM setting changes from 128 to 256. That should allow you to change the vRAM up to 256 MB. So, it's not maxed out. Oh BTW, if you enable 3D acceleration, re-install the Guest Additions. That could boost your performance. Maybe.

Re: Secondary Screen won't activate on startup
Thanks for your suggestions. Definitely see improved graphics performance in VM that is more stable after increasing vRAM.
