Vagrant is a program that relies on VirtualBox but modifies its configuration files in unknown ways to us. It is not supported on these VirtualBox user forums, they have their own vagrant support channels.
If you are having this problem with a standalone version of VirtualBox, then we can continue this discussion.

I am having similar issues when trying to install the standalone version of VB taken from this website. I first had issues with an already installed VB where I would get NS_ERROR_FACTORY_NOT_REGISTERED when I started the program (it has been working flawlessly for over a year). I uninstalled it with the uninstall.tool, rebooted and tried to reinstall it, and I have been getting this exact error in my install log since then. I have OSX 10.11.
I pray there is not something wrong with my host OS, but I have been looking around and have not found a proper solution to this. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Once you start the installer package, press Cmd-L to show the installer log window.
Choose to "Show All Logs" from the detail level drop-down list.
Before you finalize the installation, due to error or not, click "Save" on the installer log window.
ZIP it and attach it to your reply.
Post the output of the commands (from /Applications/Utilities/Terminal):
ls -ale@ /
ls -ale@ /private/tmp

Using OS X El Capitan 10.11.16, trying to install VirtualBox 5.1.6
You have DropBox running (.dbfseventsd). You have installed applications in "/opt/" (macports? brew?). I don't even know what "/js" is, I just hope it doesn't stand for JavaScript. What other modifications have you done to the system?
@jacao
Same questions, except you didn't list the output of the two "ls".

I'm having exactly the same case as with Wux (except that I don't have vargant), today I started Virtualbox and got the error “NS_ERROR_FACTORY_NOT_REGISTERED”. Then I tried to reinstall it, installation failed and my /var/log/install.log has the same error NSPOSIXErrorDomain Code=1 "Operation not permitted". Uninstall tool didn't help too.

You didn't attach any of the requested info. Please do. "Me too" doesn't help if we can't/don't discover a pattern.

What On Earth is going on today??? Four reports in one day with the same exactly error!!!???!!!
There are no updates that I know of.I just noticed the "Security Update Developer Beta 2016-002 10.11.6", along with a couple of minor Safari and updates. Not sure if it changes things, but has anyone installed this update recently? I'm installing it and will update, but please provide more information, as requested below.
VirtualBox 5.1.6 and 5.1.8 (just released) install with no errors on a virgin OSX 10.11.
@ton5oku: your "ls" output is quite different, it contains the ending slashes "/", and it posts sizes with "human" numbers. I'm guessing that you've aliased your normal "ls". No problem here, but, see below.
I want you all collectively to think what you've modified in your system. Really hard. Even the smallest of changes like the aliased "ls" that ton5oku is using.
You all seem to have a couple of common root files that are not present on a virgin OSX 10.11 (ignore the dates and sizes):
drwxr-xr-x 2 root admin 68B Jan 9 2015 .PKInstallSandboxManager/
drwxr-xr-x@ 3 root wheel 102B Aug 11 2014 opt/

Update: I applied the updates and re-installed 5.1.8. No problems.

I just had the same error with an employee's mac (El Capitan). I tried the above suggestions and some others to no avail; however, (1) uninstalling virtualbox, (2) upgrading to Sierra, and (3) reinstalling virtualbox resolved the issue.
Solved (successfully installed today's release 5.1.. The problem was not in the installer but in buggy link /tmp -> /private/tmp .
I used this scenario to do the trick - http://superuser.com/questions/1133065/ ... 12_1133065.
The same thing is here on this forum - viewtopic.php?f=8&t=80134#p375428. But I didn't use any 3rd party software. (sorry for wierd links, but the rules forbid me to provide it as usual: "You must be a member for 1 days and have 1 posts before you can post urls").

Sorry for that, I had to solve the problem very immediately. My fast look at logs provided in previous messages confirmed me that it is the same case as mine.

I suppose the real source of the problem was in some background OS updates that came today/yesterday.
Thank you, socratis!

That's not a solution, believe it or not it's a workaround. What you did is install a fresh new OS. You pretty much reset the whole thing. The rest of the posters have somehow messed with their systems; the only problem is that they all messed up the same way, the same day.
