VirtualBox 5.1.6 r110634 VMGuest Crash running Linux 2.6 on Mac OS 10.12 VirtualBox

Post by dbadev »

Hi all.

I'm to see if there is a configuration issue or problem as I have downloaded the Big Data Lite VM 4.5 and am running it on VirtualBox 5.1.6. It runs fairly normally but it crashed twice today while I was away from my system. I saw a similar entry with a 3D issue, but I'm not using 2D or 3D acceleration. I do have a remote display configured and I'm checking to see if that is the culprit.

Below is a sample of the CrashDump.

Also attached is the full CrashDump.

Let's see... From your VBox.log:
Yours
00:00:01.588493 CPUM: Matched host CPU INTEL 0x6/0x3e/0x4 Intel_Core7_IvyBridge with CPU DB entry
                 'Intel Core i5-3570' (INTEL 0x6/0x3a/0x9 Intel_Core7_IvyBridge)
Mine
00:00:01.396658 CPUM: Matched host CPU INTEL 0x6/0x2a/0x7 Intel_Core7_SandyBridge with CPU DB entry
               'Intel Core i7-2635QM' (INTEL 0x6/0x2a/0x7 Intel_Core7_SandyBridge)
I'm not saying it actually means something in particular, I'm simply making a note of it. BTW, your actual processor is recognized as "Intel Xeon E5-1650 v2".

The other thing that I noticed is that you have 4 disks (39, 200, 120 and 30 GB), all of them VMDK and they are located in an external HD: "/Volumes/Eta Carinae/VirtualBox/Demo VMs/GoldenGate for Big Data Demo (BDLite 4.5)/GoldenGate for Big Data Demo (BDLite 4.5)-disk1.vmdk"
  • Did you import the VM from somewhere else?
  • What is "Eta Carinae"? External USB drive? Network drive? Second partition?
I'm not that good at Apple's crash reports, and although I promise to take a look, don't expect miracles...

My system is a Mac Pro (Black cylinder that folks sometimes call a "trash can"). Its a 3.5 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon E5 with 64 GB onboard RAM. I treat it like a small server environment to host VMs, or a large desktop depending upon what I'm working on... ;-)

This was a VM I downloaded from the Oracle Pre-built Developer VMs site: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/datab ... 04726.html. Its a self-contained image with Cloudera Hadoop, Oracle DB, and lots of other components. I use it to test and demo the Data Integration solutions like GoldenGate.

Eta Carinae (sorry I like Astronomic object naming conventions) is an external Thunderbolt SAN - its a Pegasus R6 by Promise Technologies. I use it for a whole bunch of VMs and Media.

Thanks for the help! I'll do some more testing myself as I suspect it could be related to the RDP (remote display) setting.

We interpreted the crash dump and are investigating. The crash happens in DarwinKeyboard.cpp:1350.

OK, I said that I wasn't competent in analyzing .crash files, but how on earth did you guys come up with DarwinKeyboard.cpp:1350? It's not even mentioned, let alone identified as the culprit. Just out of curiosity and willingness to learn. If you have free time...

We have a strong feeling that this issues was fixed from the upstream. Initially we were able to reproduce it with Sierra but currently we can't.
Could you please check the latest VBox 5.1 release on Sierra? Thanks in advance!
