Sound still fails with 5.1.4 and Mac 10.11.6...
For me, at least, sound is still a fail with the 5.1.4 release of virtual box on Mac 10.11.6 and Fedora 24
as a client.
It is a slight improvement in that sometimes sound is briefly available after a clean reboot.
It seems like any change to the volume mutes the sound ( forever). Sometimes the sound just goes
away all by itself.
Anyone else have a similar problem?

You should know the drill by now. VBox.log.zip, after you've had a full session and you've observed the problem. Also, please consider changing the title to show the specificity to the Fedora guest.
If that is the only guest you're seeing it and it is not widespread...

Re: Sound still fails with 5.1.4 and Mac 10.11.6...
I am also still having issues with sound, but only in a linux guest (opensuse leap), not my xp guest. I upgraded to 5.1.4 and now I sometimes get sound briefly if I reset and restart my sound system. I switched from AC97 to Intel HD Audio and then I got audio, but now the VM randomly aborts when playing audio/video.
Another issue that arose when I upgraded my Guest Addition to the latest version is that now I have double cursors (host superimposed over guest) and the guest cursor lags horribly, especially when playing video. I have used lsmod and modinfo to confirm I am using the latest guest additions.

I also have problems with audio enabled and windows 10 guest:
With audio enabled the VM collapses unexpectedly and go in "interrupted" state sometimes just when is going to reproduce sounds ( system sounds ) from W10.
No problems with audio disabled in VM settings.

@TuneSoft
- Start the VM. Not from a saved or suspended state. Clean start.
- Take the steps required to generate/observe the error.
- Shut down the VM (if it hasn't aborted by itself). Not suspended, not paused. Shut down. If you can't shut it down by normal means, close the VM window and select "Power off".
- Right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager. Select "Show Log..."
- Save it (just the first log), ZIP it and attach it in your response (see the "Upload attachment" at the bottom of the form).

If you can narrow it down to a reproducible scenario, that would be great.nfolken wrote:now the VM randomly aborts when playing audio/video.
As for the double cursors: https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/15610

Re: Sound still fails with 5.1.4 and Mac 10.11.6...
When I start playing or seek within an audio or video file I get this error most of the time: (but not always)
And sometimes it just aborts. It has even aborted once just before a system notification sound would have played. I can't track down the randomness of it, except maybe that it happens more often when the system is taxed (when playing HD videos or switching desktops).
As for the cursor issue, I have guest additions, and that ticket is for guests without guest additions installed. I have seen several posts about the double cursor issue and they all seem to come down to guest additions not being installed or loaded, but I have checked and made sure I am running the latest.

Re: Sound still fails with 5.1.4 and Mac 10.11.6...
I've seen these messages recently for a variety of host/guest combinations. I'm not sure what to make of it. Try changing the Audio, Host Driver to "Null Audio Driver", or download one of the test builds (https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Testbuilds) and see if that changes the situation. They're actively working on the audio front and that may explain the messages.

Re: Sound still fails with 5.1.4 and Mac 10.11.6...
I went back to WindowsXP to check a few things. With AC97 I seem to solidly get sound, though the log still shows those "Failed to register sample rate" errors. I switched to HD Audio, but after installing the driver, it complains "This device cannot start. (Code 10)", maybe because virtualbox no longer supports XP?
Back on linux. If I switch the host to the Null Audio device and emulate HD Audio, I no longer get the "sample rate" errors, but it still randomly aborts when playing audio...

Re: Sound still fails with 5.1.4 and Mac 10.11.6...
Now running 5.1.6, and at first I thought the audio issues had been all resolved, but unfortunatly its the intermittent problems that are the hardest to pin down. I am still occasionally having audio drop out when switching between videos or skipping within them. Strangly though, the audio also randomly comes back when doing the same thing. Checking the virtualbox logs these corresponding errors get logged:
