Upgrade from Windows 7 to 10

Post by Ali Ovlia »

I am running Windows 7 and 8.1 on Yosemite (OS X 10.10.5). When I want to upgrade to windows 10 get the following message regarding the Graphic Card Compatibility:
"VirtualBox Graphic Adapter for Windows 8
The display manufacturer hasn't made your display compatible with Windows 10...."
and can't continue upgrading!

You need to uninstall the guest additions and with the guest shutdown, change the template to Windows 10.

I uninstall Guest Edition on the guest Win 7 and shut down the guest. Then on the VBox template change the Ops to Windows 10. Start and got the same compatibility error when I request windows 10!! :(

Are you trying to upgrade using Windows Update? Download the ISO file for Windows 10 and run the upgrade from within your Win 7 VM instead.

I see!!
When I first installed Windows 10 it was when the first Insider Preview came out and I updated "in place" using the Media Creation Tool. I'm not certain that is still available so I would go with BillG's answer.

Thanks for all Help BUT when I tried downloading and installing Window 10 within VM, the Windows 1o installer after checking my VM PC gave me the following Error message:
"You can't install Windows 10 because you processor doesn't support NX"
however, after Enable PAX/NX was checked! still during installation failed due to a boot error.

To be more specific, during the upgrade from Windows 7 to 10, everything went well but when system restarted to finalize the installation process, it couldn't reboot, so I turn off the virtual machine and restart, then I got the boot error which is attached.

Have not seen this in relation to any Windows VM upgrades but, If you search that error code you will find that is relatively common when Upgrading from Windows 7 on a hardware installs. It's often tracked back to incompatible Drivers installed in Windows 7, particularly Bluetooth and Wireless Network Drivers.

See: http://www.technicalnotes.org/fix-we-co ... nstalling/ as one example.

Do an internet search and pick any of the many threads you'll find as it seems to be a question of trial and error tracking down the correct solution in each case. Of course, if you know you have installed any additional Windows Drivers in your VM that could be the clue you need to resolve the problem.

I had this error:
0xC1900101 - 0x20017
"Die Installation war nicht erfolgreich. In der Phase SAFE_OS ist während des Vorgangs BOOT ein Fehler aufgetreten."
Tried many advices - what finally helped:
* remove guest additions, delete graphic driver (use Standard Display Driver)
* change Version in Virtual Machine Settings from Windows 7 to Windows 10
* change HDD (in Virtualbox) from SATA to IDE

I had this error constantly until I changed HDD (in Virtualbox) from SATA to IDE.
Then upgrade from Win7 to Win10 went smoothly.
