A follow-up:
After uninstalling VBox, wiping out virtual disks, re-downloading osol .iso image and retrying, things are moving again.
I can't reproduce the steps that hit the wall but starting from scratch moved it forward.

After installing 1.6.2 on my 10.5.3 Mac Book Pro (3,1 - 4G RAM) I am unable to boot into 2008.05 iso image, as either soft iso or mounted cdrom.
