Audio crashing when selecting external devices

When I select my external FireWire PreSonus Firebox audio device as the default audio device on my Mac, VirtualBox crashes when trying to play sound. If I select the internal sound it works without crashing.

This must be a bug i virtualbox, anyone else experiencing this with FireWire and/or USB audio devices?

Something similar here. OSX 10.4.x with Win XP Pro SP2 and RME Fireface on a FW800 port and a TC Powercore on a FW400 port. Crashes at start up or stuttering sound.
If I remove firewire devices: no problems, XP runs smooth.
