VirtualBox is working in OSX 10.11 DP, sort of.

Post by loukingjr »

Just updated to OS X 10.11 (15A178w) and VirtualBox is still working.

OSX 10.11 is in development and won't be released until the end of July or so.

Ok, once again I spoke too soon. It seems the new Metal APIs have created some issues with certain guests. All my Windows guests: 7, 8.1 and 10 have a minor issue on boot. Window 7 looks like it's stuck on the Welcome screen but if you click on it the desktop appears and is working. Windows 8.1 and 10 look stuck on a black screen but if you click on them it takes you to the login screen and they both run..

Ubuntu will start and look like it's stuck on a black screen, if clicked on you are on the desktop and it works fine.

just a heads up.

You could always report to Apple that they're breaking previously working software...

I'm sure they are aware certain software will break.

I'm sure if they only broke things intentionally, they wouldn't bother having people beta test things :)

well in this case, the metal APIs were created to improve graphics and gaming performance and I'm guessing the developers of VirtualBox would be happy to take advantage of the improvement. :)

Obviously such changes won't happen in existing versions. So if existing working versions (4.3.28) no longer work correctly, it's Apple breaking things. Though I realize you didn't actually say if this is with 4.3 or not.

I only installed OSX 10.11 on one machine because obviously all sorts of things could break. I only have 5.0 RC1 on it but I can roll back if you like. I'm guessing the same thing will happen though. And technically, it's only semi broke. All the guests run fine. It's just the graphics glitch in the beginning. And not all Linux guests are affected.

I think I found another issue with OSX 10.11 DP and VirtualBox.

To test a users issue I finally unboxed my Superdrive. Plugged it into the iMac I have OSX 10.11 installed on (VB 5.0 RC1) . I couldn't get any guest to recognize it, and when I tried to create a USB filter I got a no device attached message. Tried the same thing with my MacBook which still has OSX 10.10.3 installed and had no trouble mounting the Superdrive.

blah.

I can confirm this behavior with VB 5.0 Release and OSX 10.11 Beta (15A215h): No USB Device is detected on any of the two ports on the MacBook Pro (Retina, 13", Late 2013, MacBookPro11,1). I was unable to find any suspicious USB-related messages in the log files.

I cross checked with Parallels Desktop 10.2.1 on the same MBP and had no trouble using USB.

That's odd. I have seen people saying they have USB trouble with both VMWare and Parallels in the Dev forums.

But yes, USB is not working with VB 5.0 and OSX 10.11.

In case anyone is interested: I just tested with VB 4.3.30 and 4.3.28. Same problem: no USB devices are detected on OSX 10.11 for now.
(Of course, I had VB 4.3.28 and OSX 10.10.x working previously without any problems.)

I can confirm too, no USB devices are detected:
OSX 10.11 El Capitan Beta 15A215h
VirtualBox 4.3.18
VirtualBox 4.3.30
VirtualBox 5.0.0

Any idea? Should open a new topic for this?
