I am running the latest version of VirtualBox on my iMac running up to date MacOS Yosemite.
I have a VM of Ubuntu Server 14.04 LTS running uPortal software that uses port 8080 for web connections.
I have the firewall on the VM turned off and the anti-virus on the host has been removed.
When I go to IP_ADDRESS_OF_VM:8080/uPortal I get the website displaying properly.
From the host I can SSH into the guest normally.
However when I try to access the above mentioned website on the guest from the host or any other computer on the same network (bridged network on guest) I get a error "Google Chrome's connection attempt to 10.253.96.42 was rejected. The website may be down, or your network may not be properly configured".
On another identical guest running just plain Apache2 I can access the basic website from the host perfectly even with the guest firewall enabled.
Am I missing something?

Re: Connection to guest problem
Since you already have a working guest, I can only advise to compare them again, especially inside the guest itself. at VirtualBox level, make sure they don't have the same MAC.
