Error starting up Ubuntu 8.04 server

VirtualBox: 1.06
Host: Mac OS X 10.5.2
Client: ubuntu-8.04-server-i386

I have successfully installed the ubuntu 8.04 server. On boot I get the following message:

This kernel requires the following features not present on the CPU:
0:6
Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

I am currently running Ubuntu 7.10 server on my VMWare Fusion with no problems at all. I was hoping VirtualBox would be my new VM software.

Enable PAE for this guest, as the Ubuntu Server OS expects it.

Not to sound to foolish, but how does one go about enabling PAE for the guest. I am experiencing the same problem and I am unfamiliar with PAE and donot see it in any of the settings for the guest.

Settings->General->Advanced->Extended Features->Enable PAE/NX

I was using an older version of VirtualBox that didnot have this option. I will try with this option enabled.

Out interest is you search the Ubuntu forums and Wikis there's quite a good comparison of the Ubuntu kernels. The purpose of PAE is to allow the x86-IA32 CPUs to address more than 4Gb RAM -- not really needed for a VM. Incidentally the Ubuntu *-virtual kernels are optimised for VM use. The JeOS server build uses this by default, and if you read the forums you will see that its fairly straight forward to swap this into a std server build. This kernel has been compiled with PAE disabled.

When I got back from up north, I tried the newer version. Appears to have fixed the problem. I appreciate the help.
