Well, I just had to reboot my MacBook - and lo and behold: the host only adaptor (vboxnet0) is gone again.

More googling led me to http://www.appscale.com/blog/2013/10/23 ... mavericks/ with a suggested workaround that does NOT require re-installing Virtual Box. The solution is the following:

1) First restart virtual box services.

Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
sudo /Library/StartupItems/VirtualBox/VirtualBox restart

This recreates /dev/vboxnetctl

2) Re-define the host-only interface (Preferences / Networks / Add)

That worked for me. I am still running 4.2.18. I have not tried 4.3.0 yet.

If you reload the kernel driver extensions the issues go away.

Here is the script:

Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
!/bin/bash

unload() {
        kextstat | grep "org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxUSB" > /dev/null 2>&1 && sudo kextunload -b org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxUSB
        kextstat | grep "org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxNetFlt" > /dev/null 2>&1 && sudo kextunload -b org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxNetFlt
        kextstat | grep "org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxNetAdp" > /dev/null 2>&1 && sudo kextunload -b org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxNetAdp
        kextstat | grep "org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxDrv" > /dev/null 2>&1 && sudo kextunload -b org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxDrv
}

load() {
        sudo kextload /Library/Extensions/VBoxDrv.kext -r /Library/Extensions/
        sudo kextload /Library/Extensions/VBoxNetFlt.kext -r /Library/Extensions/
        sudo kextload /Library/Extensions/VBoxNetAdp.kext -r /Library/Extensions/
        sudo kextload /Library/Extensions/VBoxUSB.kext -r /Library/Extensions/
}

case "$1" in
        unload|remove)
                unload
                ;;
        load)
                load
                ;;
        *|reload)
                unload
                load
                ;;
esac

Just an update for those using VirtualBox 4.3.8. The paths to the kext's have changed from /Library/Extensions to /Library/Application\ Support/VirtualBox
