I have filed a bug with Apple about this issue. I will keep the thread updated if any useful information comes from this bug report.

Thanks.

Also please note that all information about unreleased OS X updates is under a NDA, so there's very little we can publicly say at this point.

Confirmed the same problem with 10.8.2(12C50). devrac thanks for filing the Apple Bug. I tested VMWare and Parallels and they don't seem to exhibit the same issue. It seems localized to VirtualBox.

The bad thing is that if I try to disable VT-x in the VM configuration at least, it doesn't get things to work.
In that case the host OS locks up completely and hard restart is required.

For what it's worth - no such problem here with 12C50 on a 2011 MBP. Either the problem is specific to certain models (possible, but not too likely) or there's some other piece of software involved.

Thanks

michaln: I don't think there's something else involved as my machine is just few weeks old and I haven't managed to install much stuff there yet (migrating slowly for various reasons), from what may use some kexts it's probably only iStat Menus. As JBD06 notes it could be tied to 2012 Ivy Bridge models.

Same issue here on 10.8.2 (12C50) with Retina, Mid 2012. (Ivy Bridge.)

Sadly, the problem persists in build 12c53.
Nothing to report on the bug submission yet.

devrac: Which machine do you have? Any of the 2012 Ivy Bridge CPU-based models?

Indeed. I am using a 2012 retina MBP, with the 2.6GHz i7
