Hi Frank. Take a look at issue #9359. That issue contains multiple reports of panics from VBox 4.1.0 and 4.1.2.

One thing I'm noticing is that I'm not seeing the panic if I only have one virtual machine running and I shut it down, start it up, shut it down, and so on. It only seems to occur if I have two or more VMs running and I shut one down.

I have only today downloaded VB 4.1.6, and I see that so far, no comments have been made on this thread about panics with this version. Does anyone know if the issue has been resolved with this release?

Hank said: "had to downgrade all the way to 4.0.12 before the panics stopped" and I am wondering if I should uninstall 4.1.6 and look for that version 4.0.12 before I even begin to create virtual machines. Anybody with a comment?

I'm also curious to know if any other person has noticed what the original poster finally noticed: no problem as long as he doesn't run more than one virtual machine. That would be an easy answer for me since that's how I'd be operating.

Thanks to everyone for all this info. I don't have a clue what I'm doing and this helps!

I went back to 4.1.2 and since then had only one kernel panic.

That didn't fix whatever's wrong though, just changed symptoms.
Since then--
Closing VBox while a DVD player and iTunes on the Mac OS side are open crashes iTunes with this in Console:
11/23/11 8:48:06.000 PM kernel: 0 0 AppleUSBCDC: start - initDevice failed
11/23/11 8:48:07.000 PM kernel: disk2: I/O error.
11/23/11 8:48:07.000 PM kernel: disk2: I/O error.
11/23/11 8:48:07.000 PM kernel: disk2: I/O error.
11/23/11 8:48:07.000 PM kernel: disk2: I/O error.
11/23/11 8:48:07.000 PM kernel: disk2: I/O error.
11/23/11 8:48:07.988 PM diskarbitrationd: unable to probe /dev/disk2 (status code 0xFFFFFFFC).

So -- something when trying to close a VM is throwing other things off.

I've twice had VBox fail on startup, with
"[0x0-0x17017].org.virtualbox.app.VirtualBox: VirtualBox: supR3HardenedVerifyDir: Cannot trust the directory "/Applications/VirtualBox.app/Contents/MacOS": group and/or other writable (st_mode=040775)
com.apple.launchd.peruser.501: ([0x0-0x17017].org.virtualbox.app.VirtualBox[416]) Exited with code: 1

When I try to restart, I get a popup that says "Effective UID is not root (euid=502 egid=20 uid=501 gid=20) (rc=-10) Please try reinstalling Virtual Box"
Reinstalling VBox doesn't work, nor does uninstalling and reinstalling; it appears to work but VBox never opens after that, silently just closes again.

Short term fix has been in the end to reinstall OSX 10.7.2, and after that VBox will reinstall.
This is tedious as a workaround, but it's worked 3 times so far.

Is it appropriate to ask if the paid version avoids this stuff and works better? It'd be worth it for me, as I'm not a programmer, just trying to get some work done.

I downgraded at least 2 weeks ago to 4.0.12 and still experience kernel panics w/vbox featured in panic report :(

15-inch, Early 2011, Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 (11C74)

Is there a way to prevent the VBox daemon(s) from firing up will this is getting sorted out? Don't really want to uninstall if I don't have to. Also, any word on plans to fix .. no devs are busy, just asking

Ok, more info. I had upgraded my ram from original 4g to 3rd party 8g and this was causing the issue. Odd, I did some low level memory testing and it passed several times; however, taking these out and reinstalling original ram resulted in no more crashes. So the point is that vbox was NOT causing the crashes. After uninstalling vbox I was still experiencing the crashes and that's how I know. Just an account of my particular case but thought it was worth reporting in case some one else is chasing red herrings.

Also, I've been able to reinstall latest 4.1.6 version and it seems to be running fine .. only used for a bit so will report back if otherwise :D

15-inch, Early 2011, Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 (11C74) .. now back to 4g original ram!

Thanks - any information helps but I think this is particularly revealing since it seems to make clear that vbox was not the problem.

I think it's always been as likely as not that the root cause lies in the OS X kernel and not VirtualBox, but the fact remains that the system tends to crash a couple of seconds after shutting down a VirtualBox VM (and it seems to be the case that it's much more probable when shutting down a VM while one or more others remain running).

That it's not happening with 4GB is a really telling observation. I am running with 8GB; unfortunately, I just don't have the time at present to drop my system down to 4GB and do some stress testing. I can't tell from Hank's crashdump whether he's running with 8GB (it is a 64-bit kernel, though); if we could get confirmation from others that it never happens with 4GB or less physical memory.

I run 4.1.6 all the time -- and shut down my Windows 7 VM all the time. I have 4G of RAM on my 10.7-running i5 iMac and have *never* had a Kernel Panic when shutting down Windows 7. I have VB distributed to a number of computers in my department -- all with 4G RAM -- and none of them have ever reported this, either (or with 4.1.2 or 4.1.4).

And the backtraces all mention VirtualBox. I have used VBox for two years and had maybe one kernel panic in that time. After upgrading to 4.1.2, my system started going down twice a day. The panics stopped after downgrading to 4.0.12.

I'm still betting this has something to do with a regression between 4.0.12 and 4.1.0. Having more than 4 GB of RAM could be a necessary condition for the problem to occur, but in my case running VBox 4.1.x is still the trigger for the problem.

I have seen this kernel panic happen many times on a machine running with 4GB of RAM on OS X 10.6.8 and VirtualBox 4.1.4; so if it is the case that it only occurs with 8GB, then that must be specific to Lion.

Confirming again, having downgraded to 4.1.2 -- four kernel panics yesterday, one clearly just as one of two open VMs closed.

Mac Mini mid-2011 (2.3ghz i5) with Lion and 8GB of RAM (aftermarket from OWC-macsales, usually reliable; no memory test problems have showed up).

I hadn't seen til today the notion that having 8GB of RAM with Lion might be a problem; I've had 8GB all along.

EDIT
I changed RAM just now -- 4GB and one original 1GB RAM card -- and have 5GB available total now.
EDIT

I'll see how it goes. Any ideas welcome. I have a day to experiment. Just not sure what to try -- particularly since I don't know how to force this problem to occur.

I just had another, using an Ubuntu 11.10 guest. I'm attaching my crashdump files to the bug report (https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/9897).

Aside, I'm seeing a warning in Console about "very low disk" -- though I have 85GB free on the 500 GB drive -- right in with the VBox items.

Looking quickly with Google it looks like this is a common problem -- related to what's crashing VBox?
